Greek prosecutor charges 27-year-old man with homicide in Igoumenitsa knife attack

The discovery and emergency response

Police in Igoumenitsa launched a homicide investigation after a 25-year-old woman named Pinelopi was found dead at a kiosk along a local bicycle path on Sunday night, 20 September 2026. A passing pedestrian discovered her body around 21:40 and notified emergency authorities. Moments later, the victim's 27-year-old former partner phoned the emergency dispatch center of the Thesprotia Police Directorate, claiming that both he and the woman had been attacked by unknown assailants. Officers located the man in nearby dense vegetation with thoracic injuries and transported him by ambulance first to the Igoumenitsa emergency clinic and then to Filiates General Hospital. Medical staff performed a thoracic drainage on him due to a deep knife wound affecting his left lung.

Investigation and staged robbery claim

During initial questioning, the 27-year-old told police that three or four masked attackers had assaulted the pair, but investigators quickly detected contradictions in his account. Forensic examination of the suspect indicated that his chest injuries were self-inflicted rather than defensive, leading officers to suspect an attempted cover-up or suicide attempt. Within three hours of his hospitalization, the suspect admitted to killing the 25-year-old woman with a pocket knife. He directed officers to the location where he had discarded the weapon, which police recovered and sent to forensic laboratories. Investigators also recovered the victim's mobile phone for digital analysis, while the suspect's device remained missing after he allegedly discarded it.

Confession, motive dispute, and forensic findings

The suspect asserted in his statements that the meeting was arranged to settle an alleged 2,000 euro financial debt, claiming that a heated dispute broke out before he acted in a state of agitation. However, family members and colleagues strongly rejected the existence of any financial dispute between the two. The head of the Forensic Service of Epirus and Corfu, Ioannis Aivatidis, conducted the initial on-site autopsy and hospital examination. The preliminary examination revealed that the victim suffered at least ten knife strikes across her chest, back, and leg, alongside two deep neck wounds and a defensive wound on her left hand.

Legal proceedings and victim background

The victim had studied biology and fish farming, working at an aquaculture facility in Igoumenitsa for over a year before recently submitting her resignation to pursue master's studies in Athens. The couple had separated one month prior to the attack, after which the suspect traveled armed from his home in Egaleo to meet her in Igoumenitsa. Her employer expressed grief over the loss following the attack.

On Monday afternoon, a judicial investigator and prosecutor visited Filiates General Hospital, formally charging the suspect with intentional homicide, domestic violence, and weapons and narcotics offenses, the latter involving three sedative tablets discovered in his pouch. The suspect requested a public defender and received an extension until Thursday morning to submit his formal plea.
