ICE agent fatally shoots Mexican driver in Houston, triggering dual investigations
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, during an operation in Houston on Tuesday. The Department of Homeland Security said the agent fired in self-defense after the driver rammed an ICE vehicle and refused orders.
The shooting
An ICE agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, during an operation in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred shortly before 7:00 a.m. local time as agents attempted to stop his vehicle and arrest him. Araujo was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries. Bystander video published by KRIV-TV shows two agents leaning over a man lying on the ground next to a white van, with two other men handcuffed on the opposite side of the vehicle.
Official account and family response
The Department of Homeland Security stated that Araujo, described as an undocumented immigrant, rammed an ICE vehicle, refused multiple verbal orders, and used his car as a weapon in an attempt to strike an agent.
According to information we received, he rammed an ICE vehicle, refused to comply with multiple verbal orders, and turned his car into a weapon trying to hit an ICE agent.
The agency said the agent fired his service weapon in lawful self-defense. Araujo's son, Ronaldo Salgado, disputed the account, telling Telemundo Houston that his father was a construction worker who had lived in the United States for nearly 35 years and was picking up coworkers when he was killed.
My father didn't deserve this. My father lived in this country for almost 35 years, worked in construction to support me, my two brothers and my mother.
Investigations and broader context
Two separate investigations have been opened: one by the DHS and another by the FBI's Houston field office. However, according to U.S. media reports, the FBI is investigating an assault against a law enforcement officer rather than the death of the Mexican national. The shooting is the first fatal incident involving ICE agents since the deaths of Rene Goud and Alex Preti, two U.S. citizens killed while protesting ICE actions in Minneapolis in January. It comes amid a surge in immigration arrests, with ICE detaining approximately 2,000 migrants per day nationwide last week. In several past cases, initial ICE accounts of use-of-force incidents were later challenged by video evidence or court proceedings.
