United States defeats Australia 2-0 to seal World Cup round-of-16 berth with second straight win
The United States secured their place in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a dominant 2-0 win against Australia in Seattle on Friday, becoming the second co-host to advance after Mexico with a perfect six points from two matches.
Own goal opens the scoring early
The United States faced Australia in Seattle on 19 June knowing a win would guarantee progress. They wasted little time. In the 11th minute, Folarin Balogun, playing on the left flank, drove into the box and cut the ball back toward Ricardo Pepi. Australian centre-back Cameron Burgess, trying to intercept, inadvertently diverted it into his own net. The early lead sparked a fluent attacking display, with Weston McKennie orchestrating from midfield and Sergiño Dest probing down the right.
Freeman doubles the lead before the break
Just before halftime, the hosts earned a corner. The set-piece routine found Dest, whose shot was blocked, but the ball looped up with goalkeeper Patrick Beach grounded. Alex Freeman, the 21-year-old right-back, nodded the rebound into the empty net in the 43rd minute. The goal was initially ruled offside but confirmed after a VAR review, igniting celebrations on the bench and in the stands. The United States went into the interval 2-0 up.
- 11th minute: Cameron Burgess own goal from Balogun cross puts USA 1-0 up
- 43rd minute: Alex Freeman header, initially ruled offside but confirmed by VAR, makes it 2-0
- Half-time: USA lead 2-0 after dominant opening period
- Full-time: USA win 2-0, securing a round-of-16 berth
Pulisic's absence and Balogun's emergence
Captain Christian Pulisic missed the match with a calf injury sustained in the opening win over Paraguay. His absence threatened to blunt an attack that had scored four in the debut. Balogun, who bagged a double against Paraguay, stepped up again. Although he did not score, the Monaco forward's movement and delivery created the decisive own goal. The Washington Post had described his qualities ahead of the match:
The United States has long sought a striker who did not just wait for chances but helped create them with movement, timing and the confidence of a finisher.
United States controlled possession and were rarely troubled, even as Australia introduced forwards Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe at halftime.
Pochettino's project gathers credibility
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino, an Argentine, has moulded a team that presses aggressively and uses the width of the pitch. After the match, he praised the performance:
It was again a fantastic match, with a great first half. I think we dominated against a tough opponent.
He also acknowledged the crowd, noting that the atmosphere matched the energy Argentina's supporters had brought the day before. The result means the United States have won their first two World Cup matches for the first time since 1930, when the tournament featured only 13 teams. The 2026 side has outscored opponents 6-1 across two games.
Australia unable to respond
Australia, who had beaten Turkey 2-0 in their opener, stayed on three points and remained second in Group D ahead of the match between Turkey and Paraguay later that day. Coach Tony Popovic's changes at the break brought more physicality, but the Socceroos failed to carve out clear chances. The second half turned scrappy, with the United States content to protect their lead and conserve energy before the final group game against Turkey on 25 June in Los Angeles. Australia will face Paraguay in San Francisco with a knockout berth still within reach.
