Berlin police end 11-hour supermarket hostage crisis, subdue suspect with Taser
The hostage crisis ended Saturday morning when SEK special forces raided the market in Marienfelde, freeing the female cashier and arresting the suspect.
The incident
Shortly after 22:00 on Friday, 10 July 2026, a man refused to pass his items through the checkout at a supermarket on Hildburghauser Strasse in Berlin's Marienfelde district. He then suddenly threatened a female cashier with a large knife, initiating a hostage crisis. Most staff members managed to flee the store. One of them, 22-year-old Elitza K., who was on the evening shift, escaped and called the police. He later described the weapon:
It was definitely a large knife.
The cashier remained inside, held against her will. Authorities said the suspect and the hostage did not know each other, indicating the attack was random. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was the last customer of the night. Police sealed off the area and deployed special forces, negotiators and snipers on nearby buildings.
The standoff
Throughout the night, specially trained police negotiators remained in contact with the man, attempting to convince him to surrender. The SEK (Spezialeinsatzkommando) equivalent and snipers took positions around the supermarket as a precaution. The hostage was held for approximately 11 hours and 20 minutes. The standoff's timeline unfolded as follows:
- Suspect threatens cashier with knife, hostage crisis begins.
- Police negotiators talk with suspect; SEK and snipers surround store.
- SEK forces raid store, Taser suspect, free hostage, arrest man.
The raid
At around 09:20 on Saturday, 11 July, SEK officers stormed the supermarket. According to police, a Taser electric stun device was used to incapacitate the suspect without injuring the hostage. The man was subsequently arrested and removed from the scene on a stretcher. The freed cashier was led away by officers and handed over to emergency medical services for care.
Aftermath
Police reported that both the suspect and the hostage sustained injuries during the incident, though no details on their condition were immediately released. Residents of the area were not considered to be in danger at any point, authorities said. The supermarket remained closed after the operation, and witnesses, including other employees and customers present at the start of the siege, were interviewed as witnesses. The suspect faces charges related to hostage-taking and assault.
