
Glacial collapse triggers flash flood on Nepal-Tibet border, leaving 160 dead
A glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border unleashed a 30-metre wave along the Bhote Koshi river on 26 August, destroying bridges, sweeping away a hydropower dam, and leaving hundreds of pilgrims missing.
Disaster strikes border valleys
A sudden flash flood tore through Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts in northern Nepal and adjacent areas of Tibet on 26 August 2026. Floodwaters carrying mud, rocks, and debris surged along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli, and Narayani river systems roughly 64.4 kilometres north of Kathmandu. By Wednesday night, Nepal police confirmed the recovery of 157 bodies, while Chinese officials reported at least three deaths on the Tibetan side of the border. Authorities on both sides expect the total number of fatalities to rise substantially, as Nepal's tourism board reported more than 400 people missing, including around 350 foreign nationals from 26 countries.
Pilgrimage route devastated
The disaster struck during the peak August and September season for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a 6,638-metre peak in Tibet considered sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon religion. Caravans of devotees, guides, and porters were travelling north from Kathmandu toward the border crossing at Rasuwagadhi when the surge hit. Travel agencies reported losing contact with approximately 400 travellers in the border zone as floodwaters washed away key transit infrastructure. The deluge destroyed bridges, collapsed highways, and severed all land communications throughout Rasuwa district, leaving hundreds of people stranded in isolated Himalayan valleys.
Glacial collapse and seismic triggers
Satellite imagery from Planet Labs analyzed by Earth scientists showed that a significant section of a glacier detached at an altitude of approximately 5,200 metres and plunged 1,200 metres onto the valley floor. Geoscientists detected rapid snowmelt in the area over the preceding 24 hours, leaving previously snow-covered valley glaciers exposed as bare ice before the failure occurred.
Some of the glaciers in the valley were covered in snow yesterday and today are mostly bare ice. In other words, and I have not seen data from any weather stations yet, it was probably warm.
In addition to rising temperatures, investigators are examining a magnitude 4.4 earthquake registered by the United States seismic agency approximately 74 kilometres north along the Nepal-Tibet border minutes before the collapse. Engineering geologists established that falling ice and rock formed a temporary dam across the Bhote Koshi river before breaching, producing a water column 20 to 30 metres high that obliterated a hydroelectric dam under construction downstream.
It is confirmed that a significant part of the glacier front broke off and triggered the event, probably carrying with it a significant amount of rock and sediment.

Regional vulnerability and emergency response
Emergency responders and military personnel mounted search and rescue operations across damaged terrain on both sides of the frontier. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for large-scale search operations, while the Prime Minister of Nepal stated that national emergency officials would coordinate disaster response efforts directly with China. The disaster fits into a broader history of catastrophic Himalayan hydrological events, where United Nations data in 2023 showed that Nepal's glaciers melted 65% faster over the preceding decade than during the prior ten years, losing nearly one third of their total ice volume across three decades.
