Frankfurt tops Hesse with 27 off-leash dog areas, while Wiesbaden and Offenbach have none
A survey of Hessian cities reveals stark differences in designated off-leash areas for dogs. Frankfurt offers 27 such spaces, while Wiesbaden, Offenbach and Marburg have none.
Letting a dog run free in the city can be dangerous near traffic and disruptive to wildlife, especially during spring breeding season when leash laws often apply. Designated dog parks offer a safe alternative, but their availability varies widely across Hesse.
Frankfurt dominates with 27 areas
Frankfurt currently has 27 designated dog exercise areas, a number that is still growing. Two new sites were added in the past two years on Habsburgerallee and Kleyerstraße, and a further area in Zeppelinpark is due to open this year. The city is also planning a dog park in Preungesheim and scouting locations in Zeilsheim.
Darmstadt and Gießen offer modest options
Darmstadt has two fenced dog parks, at the Orangerie and in the Bürgerpark, the latter recently upgraded with more benches, extra bins, a sand digging area and a higher fence. An open off-leash area was also designated last year in the Albert-Schweitzer-Anlage. Gießen has two dog exercise areas, one on Waldbrunnenweg since 2015 and another in the western part of the city since 2024.
Kassel tests demand with a pilot
Kassel set up its first and only dog exercise area last year in the Wolfanger district as a pilot project. The city will evaluate usage and demand over the course of a year before deciding on any further sites.
Hanau offers four, while others lag behind
Hanau has four dog exercise areas: in Steinheim am Lämmerspieler Weg, the Freigerichtviertel, at Venussee in the northwest and near Kinopolis in the city centre. By contrast, Wiesbaden, Offenbach and Marburg currently have no officially designated dog parks at all.
