Hessentag 2026 ends with 1.1 million visitors, sweltering parade and a handover to Idstein
Rain at the start, heat at the finish: the ten-day Hessentag state festival in Fulda closed Sunday with a parade and a visitor count of about 1.1 million, well above the 700,000 expected. Next year the event moves to Idstein in the Rheingau-Taunus district.
The Hessentag, Hesse's annual state festival, concluded in Fulda on Sunday after ten days that swung from steady drizzle to temperatures above 30°C.
Attendance far above forecast
State government figures put the crowd at around 1.1 million, exceeding the pre-festival estimate of 700,000 and even surpassing the roughly 950,000 who attended the 2025 edition in Bad Vilbel. Organisers were already reporting that expectations had been beaten before the final weekend.
- 2025 Bad Vilbel
- 950000
- 2026 Fulda (expected)
- 700000
- 2026 Fulda (actual)
- 1100000
Weather extremes
Opening Friday a week earlier had been a test for waterproof spirits, with persistent light rain. By the closing days the challenge flipped: emergency services reinforced paramedic teams and urged visitors to stick to water and tea, not beer and wine. For Sunday's parade, Fulda organisers procured 15 pallets of bottled water for the roughly 3,500 participants.
Closing parade
More than 120 foot groups, floats and music formations marched the nearly two-kilometre route through the old town. The four-hour procession ended with the ceremonial handover of the Hessentag flag, pointing the way to Idstein in 2027. Police described the atmosphere throughout the festival as peaceful and cheerful, with only a few minor incident-related deployments (a lost rucksack and a startled grass snake).
Political praise
Fulda's mayor Heiko Wingenfeld called the visitor numbers "outstanding" and said the city had been filled with peacefully celebrating people for ten days. Large open-air concerts on the cathedral square, including a performance by Schlager star Roland Kaiser in front of 11,000 fans, were among the highlights. The Hessentag showed Hesse at its best. It impressively demonstrated what our state stands for: community, hospitality and solidarity.
Next year in Idstein
With the flag now passed, preparations begin for the 2027 Hessentag in Idstein, a historic town in the Rheingau-Taunus district of western Hesse.
