
Father, 54, saves twin sons from rough sea at Otranto, then collapses and dies on shore
Gennaro Cagnazzo, 54, rescued his 8-year-old twin sons from strong currents at Lido La Castellana in Otranto on Saturday, but collapsed on the beach moments later and could not be revived.
The incident
On Saturday morning, around 11:30, strong winds and rough seas at Lido La Castellana in Otranto created dangerous conditions. Two 8-year-old twin boys were swept away from the shore by the current, struggling to stay afloat. Despite the weather, many bathers had entered the water seeking relief from the heat.
Rescue and collapse
Their father, 54-year-old Gennaro Cagnazzo from Sanarica, heard their cries and immediately dove into the water. He reached the children and brought them back to the beach safely. Moments after reaching the shore, however, he collapsed, possibly from shock or physical exertion.

Emergency response

Aftermath
The twin boys were unharmed. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of death, but initial reports suggest a sudden illness. The community of Sanarica is mourning the loss of a father who gave his life to save his children.
