European heatwave shifts toward Greece, pushing temperatures to 38°C but avoiding 40s
The heatwave that scorched Europe is moving toward the Balkans, but meteorologists say Greece will see temperatures peak around 38°C rather than the extreme 40s, with strong Aegean winds keeping fire danger high.
Sunday's conditions
On Sunday, strong north-northeasterly winds swept across the Aegean, reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort, while temperatures peaked at 36°C in western mainland areas. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) reported generally clear skies, with some afternoon clouds and isolated showers in northwestern mountains and Crete. The combination of heat and gusty winds elevated the wildfire risk across the country.
Heatwave shifts east
A heatwave that gripped Europe is now moving toward the Balkans, but Greece will not experience the extreme 40°C-plus temperatures that hit other countries. According to EMY meteorologist Anastasia Tyraski, the hottest day for winds was Sunday, with a gradual weakening expected from Monday. From Monday evening, a warm air mass will push temperatures to 37°C, locally up to 38°C in western and northern regions.
Escalating temperatures through the week
Between Tuesday 30 June and Thursday 2 July, maximum temperatures will reach 38°C, first in northern parts and then spreading to central, southern, and eastern mainland areas. The heat will combine with local thunderstorms, which is expected to prevent a full-blown extreme heatwave with 40°C readings. Coastal and island areas will remain cooler, with highs around 33-35°C.
- Strong winds up to 8 Beaufort; temperatures up to 36°C, isolated mountain showers
- Winds gradually weaken; heatwave approaches, temperatures rise to 37-38°C locally
- Peak heat begins; 38°C in northern mainland, spreading southward
- Widespread 38°C across central and southern mainland; local thunderstorms
- Heat persists at 38°C; slow decline expected after early July
Fire risk and expert warnings
Theodoros Kolydas, director of EMY, warned that the coming fortnight will bring "tropical characteristics" to major cities like Athens, Thessaloniki, and Larissa, where the urban heat island effect will intensify discomfort. Fire danger remains high due to strong north winds and dry conditions.
The next fortnight will unfold with purely tropical characteristics.
