Hamburg schools open for 274,420 students, marking highest attendance in 45 years
Hamburg public and private schools welcomed 274,420 pupils on 20 August 2026 after six weeks of summer vacation, backed by 16,166 full-time teaching positions.
Record enrollment figures
More than 274,000 children and teenagers returned to classrooms across Hamburg on 20 August 2026, concluding their six-week summer holiday. School Senator Ksenija Bekeris of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) announced that a total of 274,420 pupils are expected across the city's state and private general education schools. This figure marks an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous school year, reaching the highest overall student volume recorded in Hamburg in 45 years. In addition to general education enrollments, approximately 45,500 teenagers and young adults are attending one of the city's 29 vocational schools (Berufsschulen).
State-run schools account for the substantial majority of the general student population, absorbing 254,420 children and teenagers. This represents an increase of 1.3% in public school attendance relative to the prior year. Growth varied noticeably across different school tiers within the state network. While enrollment at primary schools (Grundschulen) is projected to decrease slightly by 0.1%, the Hamburg school authority expects student numbers at secondary schools (weiterführende Schulen) to expand by 2% overall.
Staggered schedule for entry grades
Although most students resumed classes on Thursday, entry-level grades at two key transition stages were granted several additional days away from the classroom. Approximately 17,400 fifth-graders will report to their new secondary schools on Monday, 24 August. The ceremonial school entry (Einschulung) for roughly 19,000 incoming first-graders will follow on Tuesday, 25 August, at the majority of primary schools across the city. This phased schedule allows primary and secondary institutions to organize festive welcome events and handle orientation logistics before regular classes begin.
- Classes resume for general student body across Hamburg schools
- Classes begin for approximately 17,400 fifth-graders at secondary schools
- Enrollment ceremonies take place for approximately 19,000 first-graders
Staffing allocations across 471 schools

District schools (Stadtteilschulen) received the largest staffing allocation, accounting for 5,970 full-time teaching positions. Primary schools follow closely with 5,329 positions, while academic high schools (Gymnasien) were assigned 4,013 full-time roles. Special education schools (Sonderschulen) operate with 854 full-time teaching posts across the city.
Alongside classroom educators, the educational administration maintains 2,566 positions for pedagogical and therapeutic specialist personnel. These specialists provide targeted developmental and therapeutic support across regular and specialized schooling tracks in the municipal system.

All-day care and holiday programs
The start of the academic year coincides with the nationwide implementation of a statutory legal claim to all-day care at primary schools across Germany, which took effect on 1 August. Hamburg established its own municipal all-day care framework in 2012, extending coverage to all school-age children up to 14 years old.
Participation rates in Hamburg's municipal care structure remain high across all districts. Nearly 92% of all primary school pupils currently take part in the city's all-day care framework. In addition, around 51% of primary students utilize school holiday care programs, which allow families to book supervised care for up to eight weeks throughout the school year.
