Colombia tops Group K after 0-0 draw with Portugal as both sides reach World Cup knockout stage
Colombia clinched first place in Group K after a goalless but pulsating draw with Portugal, as both teams secured their places in the World Cup round of 32.
A stalemate full of chances
The match at Miami Gardens produced a scoreless result that belied the action on the pitch. Colombia carved out the better openings, with Jhon Arias causing persistent problems and Jhon Cordoba forcing a sharp save from Diogo Costa in the 17th minute. A flowing move in the 22nd minute ended with Ruben Neves clearing an Arias effort off the goal line. Portugal’s best first-half chance fell to Bruno Fernandes, whose close-range strike was denied by Camilo Vargas’s excellent reflex save in the 39th minute.
Second half and disallowed winner
After the break, Joao Felix missed a header and Cristiano Ronaldo saw a goal flagged offside after mistiming a run. Richard Rios, a second-half substitute, steered an Arias cross narrowly wide. The decisive moment nearly came in stoppage time when Davinson Sanchez headed in a Juan Fernando Quintero cross, but the goal was ruled out for a tight offside decision.
