PKP SA begins 13.5 million PLN revamp of 19th-century Gronowo Elbląskie station
The 13.5 million PLN project will upgrade passenger amenities, add accessibility features, and house local municipal offices and a wedding hall by 2028.
Station overhaul and passenger amenities
State railway operator Polskie Koleje Państwowe (PKP SA) is launching the comprehensive reconstruction of the railway station in Gronowo Elbląskie in October 2026. The investment carries a total gross budget of nearly 13.5 million PLN to adapt the 19th-century transport building to contemporary railway standards. The structure dates back to the second half of the 19th century, possessing over one hundred years of operational history in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. PKP SA stated that the planned works will preserve the original architectural details of the structure while modernizing interior facilities to meet present passenger needs. Construction activity is set to begin in October 2026, with the official timetable setting completion for the first quarter of 2028.
Passenger facilities and accessibility upgrades
The reconstruction concentrates key passenger amenities on the ground floor of the station. The new layout includes an indoor waiting room, public restrooms, and designated spaces for ticket vending machines as well as snack and drink dispensers. To ensure broad accessibility, the project will eliminate existing architectural barriers throughout the premises. The building will feature specially adapted toilets and tactile guiding pathways to assist visually impaired passengers with indoor navigation. These modifications are designed to ease travel for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, parents travelling with young children, and passengers transporting heavy luggage.
Municipal services and wedding hall
Alongside passenger traffic, the renovated facility will serve municipal functions following a lease agreement between PKP SA and the local government of Gronowo Elbląskie. The municipality has leased more than 300 square metres of building space to accommodate local public services. This designated area will house the Municipal Social Welfare Centre (Gminny Ośrodek Pomocy Społecznej), a branch of the public library, and a civil registry wedding hall. By bringing these bodies together under one roof, the local authority intends to make the station an active community venue for residents who are not catching trains. Local couples will be able to hold civil marriage ceremonies in the refurbished 19th-century building once the site reopens.

Exterior developments and regional projects
The scope of the 13.5 million PLN project also encompasses the immediate surroundings of the railway station. Planned exterior improvements include building new pedestrian pavements, laying out dedicated car parking spaces, installing street furniture, and tidying local green spaces. The building itself will be fitted with modern electronic security systems and intelligent building management systems to oversee daily operations. The Gronowo Elbląskie project forms part of a wider series of railway station modernizations across the Warmian-Masurian region. In August 2026, PKP SA signed a contract to renovate the station in Pasłęk, and the rail operator recently issued a tender for architectural design works on the station in Braniewo.
