Five forest fires in Greece sparked by lightning, quickly contained by firefighting forces
Five forest fires erupted across central Greece on Friday afternoon, triggered by intense lightning activity without rain. Firefighting units deployed 45 firefighters, 16 vehicles, and 15 aircraft to bring the blazes under control.
A cluster of five forest fires broke out on 13 June 2026 in the regions of Korinthia, Argolida, and Viotia, caused by midday lightning strikes during unstable weather. The Fire Service reported that all fires were either extinguished or contained within hours, and no homes or critical infrastructure were threatened.
Fire locations
Two fires started in Korinthia: one at Schinos, which according to the Fire Service has now been extinguished, and another at Skalosia, which is contained. Two fires in Methana on the Argolida peninsula have been contained, and a fire near Thiva in Viotia has also been contained.
Response deployment
Overall, 45 firefighters worked the fires, supported by four pedestrian units and 16 vehicles. From the air, eight aircraft and seven helicopters were deployed. The rapid mobilisation prevented further spread across the forested areas.
Drone monitoring
Throughout the operations, the Unified Coordination Centre for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK) received continuous live feeds from drones equipped with optical and thermal cameras, providing real‑time situational awareness.
Wider picture
In the past 24 hours, a total of 31 agricultural and forest fires were recorded nationwide, according to the Fire Service. Local investigation offices and arson units are looking into the causes of the five lightning‑caused blazes, and the Fire Service has urged the public to remain cautious and follow the instructions of authorities.
