Very high fire risk across six Greek regions today as strong winds blow
The Greek Civil Protection authority has issued a very high fire risk warning (category 4) for six regions, including Attica and Crete, for Sunday, July 5, as strong north winds up to 8 Beaufort are expected.
Warning issued
Greece's General Secretariat for Civil Protection, part of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, has issued a very high fire risk warning (category 4) for Sunday, July 5, 2026. The warning, based on the Fire Risk Prediction Map, covers extensive areas of the country and urges citizens to exercise extreme caution.
Affected regions
The regions under the highest alert are Attica, Peloponnese (Corinthia regional unit), Central Greece (Euboea regional unit), North Aegean (Chios, Samos, Ikaria), South Aegean (Cyclades), and Crete. A high risk (category 3) is also forecast for many other parts of the country.
Weather conditions
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) forecasts strong north winds in the Aegean Sea, possibly reaching 8 Beaufort locally during the midday and afternoon hours. These conditions, combined with dry vegetation, significantly increase the danger of fire ignition and rapid spread.

- Very high fire risk expected; strong north winds up to 8 Beaufort forecast
Safety recommendations
The ministry also advises residents in or near forested areas to keep their surroundings clear of dry vegetation and flammable materials, remove branches and pine needles, and ensure vegetation does not touch buildings. Field burning is strictly prohibited during the fire season.During the weekend, when travel and outdoor activities increase, no action that could cause a fire should be taken. Outdoor barbecues near forests or dry vegetation, work that produces sparks such as using a grinder or welding, burning of residues, or even discarding a lit cigarette can, under the prevailing conditions, lead to a large fire.
Response measures
All relevant state services, regional authorities, and municipalities in the high-risk areas have been placed on increased readiness to respond immediately to any fire outbreaks. Citizens who spot a fire are urged to call the Fire Service immediately at 199 and follow instructions from authorities and 112 emergency messages without delay.
