Greece braces for heat as temperatures climb to 37°C and Aegean winds hit 7 Beaufort

Nationwide overview

Greece will see generally clear skies on Monday, June 29, with only temporary cloudiness expected during the midday and afternoon hours in the northern mainland and the mountains of Crete. The EMY reports a slight rise in temperatures compared to previous days, while winds will blow from northerly directions across the country.

Temperature highs

Temperatures will range widely. In the Ionian Sea and the eastern islands, highs will reach 33 to 35°C. Mainland areas will see 35 to 36°C, with western regions locally hitting 37°C. The Cyclades and Crete will be cooler, with maximums of 30 to 32°C. Attica will reach 35°C, though eastern parts will be 2 to 3 degrees lower. Thessaloniki will also peak at 35°C.

Wind conditions

Winds will be northerly at 3 to 5 Beaufort across most of the country. In the Aegean Sea, however, they will strengthen to 6 Beaufort and locally up to 7 Beaufort, particularly during the morning hours. The eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese will experience winds of 4 to 6 Beaufort, with northern parts reaching 7.

Regional breakdown

In Macedonia and Thrace, skies will be mostly clear with some afternoon clouds, winds from the north at 3 to 4 Beaufort (easterly areas up to 6 in the morning), and temperatures from 18 to 36°C, with western Macedonia 3 to 4 degrees cooler. The Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Sterea, and Western Peloponnese will see clear skies with afternoon clouds in the Epirus mountains, winds 3 to 5 Beaufort, and temperatures 20 to 37°C. Thessaly, Eastern Sterea, Evia, and Eastern Peloponnese will be clear with north-northeast winds 4 to 5 Beaufort (eastern parts 6 to 7 in the morning) and highs of 36°C. The Cyclades and Crete will be clear with north winds 4 to 6 Beaufort and temperatures 22 to 32°C. The eastern Aegean islands and Dodecanese will be clear with north winds 4 to 7 Beaufort and temperatures 22 to 34°C.
