Greece enacts winter quiet hours with noise bans from 15:30 to 17:30 and 22:00 to 07:30
The seasonal regulations set daily quiet periods from 15:30 to 17:30 and 22:00 to 07:30 through 31 March 2027, with violations carrying fines or up to five months in prison.
Winter schedule details
Greece transitioned to its winter quiet hours on Thursday, 1 October 2026, establishing updated noise restriction periods across the country. The winter schedule remains in force through Wednesday, 31 March 2027, under legal provisions outlined in Greek Police Order 3 of 1996. The winter timetable establishes two daily quiet periods for all citizens and commercial operations. The afternoon quiet window runs between 15:30 and 17:30, while the overnight quiet window starts at 22:00 in the evening and concludes at 07:30 the following morning. This change replaces the summer schedule, which governed the period from 1 April to 30 September with afternoon hours from 15:00 to 17:30 and night hours from 23:00 to 07:00.

Prohibited public and domestic activities
During both daily quiet intervals, regulations prohibit any activity that produces excessive sound or disrupts local residents and public peace. Within private homes, residential buildings, and private premises, forbidden activities include noisy social events, organized dances, shouting, and high-volume audio playback from televisions, radios, musical instruments, or other sound devices. These restrictions apply equally outside residential buildings across streets, town squares, and public transportation networks. Loud arguments, noisy discussions, and disruptive games in cafés, taverns, or public gathering centers are explicitly barred. Furthermore, noisy vehicle operation, disturbances, and disputes within car stations, parking lots, or garages are banned during both quiet intervals.
Commercial obligations and pet rules
Commercial establishments, stores, and retail businesses hold a direct legal obligation to curb all noise during the designated afternoon and overnight timeframes. The loading and unloading of commercial merchandise or cargo is strictly limited when such tasks generate disturbance for nearby residents. The operation of sirens and external acoustic warning systems is prohibited unless a genuine emergency justifies their activation. Residents carrying out daily personal chores must also avoid creating disruptive sounds during these quiet windows. In addition, pet owners are required to supervise their domestic animals and ensure that pets do not produce continuous, intense, or disturbing noise that interrupts neighborhood peace.
Exemptions and legal penalties
The legal framework contains a strict exemption mechanism for essential utility interventions that cannot be postponed. Emergency public utility works are permitted during quiet hours only when operators obtain a special permit issued by the commander of the relevant local police station. All other non-emergency construction, noisy manual work, and loud industrial activity remain prohibited without this explicit police authorization. Individuals and business operators who violate the quiet hours provisions face formal criminal penalties under Greek law. Sanctions for non-compliance include financial fines or court-ordered prison sentences of up to five months.
