Greece introduces ferry discounts of up to 50% for island substitute teachers
Greece's education and maritime ministries have launched a discount scheme offering up to 50% off ferry passenger and vehicle tickets for substitute teachers serving on islands during the 2026–2027 school year.
Joint ministerial transport initiative
The Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy have instituted a coordinated transport discount program for the 2026–2027 school year. The initiative is designed to alleviate the financial cost of relocation and seasonal travel for substitute teachers appointed to public schools on Greek islands. Educational personnel frequently encounter high transport expenses when commuting between the mainland and island teaching assignments. Under the joint ministerial framework, Greek coastal shipping companies have introduced discounts of up to 50% for qualifying educators and their personal transport vehicles.
Participating ferry operators and discount rates
Participating maritime companies have introduced tiered fare concessions that apply to both individual passenger tickets and accompanying motor vehicles. SEAJETS offers a 50% fare reduction across all vessels in its fleet for primary and secondary substitute teachers, covering personal tickets, passenger cars, and motorcycles. Levante Ferries Group applies an identical 50% discount for educators and their vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, across the full academic year. Karthaia N.E. Goutos Lines provides a 50% price reduction for newly appointed teaching staff and their vehicles. Liveditta Limited grants a 30% discount on maritime passenger tickets for substitute personnel during designated travel dates. Skyros Shipping Company offers a 30% reduction on passenger tickets and private cars, with the stipulation that the concession applies exclusively to non-subsidised ferry connections.

Booking procedures and documentation rules
Educators seeking to use the discounts must comply with strict verification and booking protocols established by the ministries and ferry operators. Beneficiaries are required to produce their Greek police identification card along with a physical copy of the relevant Government Gazette issue or the formal ministerial hiring decision confirming their placement. These documents must be presented both at the ticket counter upon purchase and at port check-in prior to boarding. Ticket issuance for SEAJETS and Levante Ferries is handled exclusively through cooperating ticketing agencies and port offices, excluding standard online reservation platforms. Levante Ferries Group also specifies that discounted tickets cannot be converted into open-date bookings and remain valid solely for the scheduled travel dates. Operators ensure the discounted rates are loaded into booking databases in advance of each active travel phase.
