President Dan sets Friday deadline for parties to agree on minority government as PSD and opposition negotiate
Romanian President Nicușor Dan, speaking in Cluj on Wednesday, said parties must present him with a consensus on a pro-Western minority executive by Friday 26 June, while PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR continue parallel talks on the future cabinet.
Talks for a minority government
President Nicușor Dan announced on 24 June that a round of consultations held the previous day had concluded with a commitment to form a pro-Western minority cabinet. The parties are now expected to agree on the conditions under which they would support such an executive without taking direct part in it. Dan stressed the need for urgency.
I hope they are serious and we close this as soon as possible.
The president, who was en route to Poland for the Eastern Flank Summit, stopped in Cluj-Napoca to attend a technology event before outlining the timeline. He indicated that Thursday should be used by party leaders for internal discussions, and on Friday they should come to him with conclusions.
Party positions diverge
The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has already moved forward. During a unanimous vote in the National Political Bureau, the party decided to assume responsibility for governing and formally nominated its president, Sorin Grindeanu, for the post of prime minister. Grindeanu confirmed his readiness to take the role.
Meanwhile, leaders of the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Save Romania Union (USR) and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) met on Wednesday to negotiate a joint pact. USR president Dominic Fritz stated that they intend to present the president with a proposal for a minority government formed by the three parties, stressing that Romania needs a serious government that continues reforms and delivers for people. Fritz said he had spoken with Ilie Bolojan (PNL) and Kelemen Hunor (UDMR) to coordinate the offer.
Eastern Flank Summit and security
A separate but concurrent priority for the president is the Eastern Flank Summit in Poland on Thursday. Dan underlined its significance for Romania, especially regarding protection against drones and other threats from Russia.
It is important for Romania because it concerns protection from drones and threats in general from Russia and it is important for us to emphasize that we must bring capabilities also to the South and especially to the Black Sea.
The president's travel schedule means the designation of a prime minister is likely only after his return, reinforcing the Friday deadline for political clarity.
A tight timeline
Dan avoided confirming whether Grindeanu has a genuine chance, replying only: "Let's see what the parties agree." He reiterated that Thursday would be spent by the parties in talks and that Friday should bring the final conclusions. The coming hours are critical as the country looks to resolve the political uncertainty and install a functioning government.
