Górnik Zabrze draws 1-1 with Fenerbahce but exits Champions League qualifiers after 1-2 aggregate loss

Górnik Zabrze pushed Fenerbahce to the limit at a sold-out Arena Zabrze but could not find the second goal needed to force extra time, exiting the Champions League qualifying path after a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night.

How the tie unfolded

The Turkish side came to Zabrze protecting a 1:0 win from the first leg in Istanbul. That slender advantage was stretched in the 12th minute when referee Lawrence Visser pointed to the spot after reviewing a foul by Lukas Sadilek on Milan Skriniar at a corner on the VAR monitor. Anderson Talisca converted the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way, just as he had done in the first meeting. Shortly after the goal, thick smoke from flares lit by the Torcida ultras forced a stoppage of several minutes.

We are sad, but I have to say that from the first minute I was proud because the players played a very good match. It's a shame about the penalty, because we would have played better with a score of 0:0. Then we came back, put pressure on the opponent, and they had problems in defence. We deservedly scored the equalising goal.

The equaliser and second-half push

Górnik grew into the contest after a free-kick from Erik Janža was saved in the 29th minute. In the tenth minute of added time at the end of the first half, a corner caused chaos in the Fenerbahce penalty area and Michal Sacek reacted quickest to fire a low shot past goalkeeper Mert Gunok, levelling the score on the night at 1:1 and cutting the aggregate deficit to 2:1. Manager Gasparik later regretted the half could not last "at least five minutes longer".

After the break Mourinho introduced Mason Greenwood (signed days earlier for 39 million euro), but it was Gasparik's substitutes who threatened first: Maksym Chłań tested Gunok with a fierce shot moments after coming on alongside Sondre Liseth around the hour mark. Fenerbahce managed the closing stages professionally, surviving two further scares from Talisca and Kerem Akyurkoglu late on, and the 1:1 scoreline held.

Reaction and context

Gasparik told Polsat Sport he "felt from the first minute that we could play them at the same level" and described spells where the visitors were "chaotic, especially in defence". In his press conference he revealed a brief post-match exchange with Lukas Podolski, who emphasised that "details decide things in football" and that the team still lacks something at this level.

You can't hold it against Górnik. Fenerbahce are simply too high a bar and we all knew that, but we still saw 180 minutes of great determination from the Polish vice-champions. There's nothing to be ashamed of.

Polish pundits echoed the sentiment. Piotr Dumanowski of Eleven Sports called the tie a "tragicomedy", pointing to the poorly set wall in Istanbul and the "stupid foul" for the penalty in Zabrze as self-inflicted wounds. Mateusz Ligęza of Radio Zet praised how Górnik "did everything to earn that goal, they clawed it out, ripped it away". The club's official account called the performance a display of "miners' character, ambition, and a team that has already given reasons for pride".

What comes next

Górnik Zabrze now drop into the Europa League third qualifying round. Their opponent will be the winner of the tie between FC Twente and Ferencvaros, the Budapest side holding a 2:1 away win after the first leg. The Europa League fixtures are scheduled for early August. Wednesday's attendance of 28,499 at Arena Zabrze was the largest and loudest Gasparik said he has experienced in over a year at the club.
