Police rescue injured greylag goose from railway tracks near Hamburg's Dammtor station
Federal police responding to a report of people on the tracks near Hamburg's Dammtor station instead found a severely injured greylag goose early Wednesday morning.
The callout
Federal police were dispatched to the railway tracks near Hamburg's Dammtor station around 4 a.m. on Wednesday after a report of possible persons in the track bed. Officers found no people, but instead discovered a severely injured greylag goose.
The rescue
The goose had injuries to a wing and a foot, leaving it unable to move on its own. Police first took the bird to their station, then, after consulting the city's Schwanenvater (swan father), transported it to an animal shelter for veterinary care.
The Schwanenvater
Hamburg's Schwanenwesen, the office of the swan father, was established in 1674. While best known for tending the Alster swans, a city landmark, its staff also care for helpless wild animals found in the urban area and work on environmental protection around the Alster lakes.
