Media attention and arrival in Athens
The move drew substantial coverage in Mexico, with correspondents from Network Televisa Univision and ESPN traveling directly to Athens to document his arrival and medical procedures. Gustavo Ramírez, reporting for Televisa Univision, spoke in Piraeus regarding the significance of the transfer for Mexican football after the World Cup.
The fact that we are here in Athens, in Piraeus, for the transfer of Armando González, our own La Hormiga, to Olympiacos shows the importance of the transfer.
Speaking at Karaiskakis Stadium, González noted that his decision prioritized athletic progression over financial considerations, referencing Olympiacos's 48 league championships and European trophy.
From childhood I had a dream, to play football. This dream was born in Mexico and now brings me further than I imagined. It was written. My destiny is Olympiacos.
Tactical fit under José Luis Mendilibar
González begins training immediately at the Rentis sports center under Spanish manager José Luis Mendilibar. The striker arrived in Greece with full match fitness from recent domestic appearances in Mexico, removing the need for an extended conditioning period. Mendilibar gains an active penalty-box finisher known for one-touch finishing and offensive movement. Club staff indicated that González is expected to be available for selection in the upcoming away fixture against Asteras Tripolis.
