The preliminary round takes place at the local Saalbau venue, with official proceedings scheduled to begin at 15:00. A panel of roughly 70 expert jurors will question the participating candidates throughout the afternoon. A total of eleven contestants, comprising ten women and one man, are participating in the opening stage of the competition. The primary objective of the session is to narrow the field down from eleven participants to five finalists. Those selected by the jury will earn the right to compete in the final round exactly one week later.

Examination criteria and regional representation

During the preliminary examination, candidates are required to demonstrate specialized knowledge across multiple facets of the wine industry. The questioning covers technical viticulture, vineyard practices, cellar management, and contemporary wine marketing. In addition to technical understanding, the 70-member jury assesses the general poise, presentation style, and personality of each candidate on stage. Eleven of Germany's official wine-growing regions have sent representatives to the 2026 competition, covering areas from the Ahr in the north to Württemberg in the south. Two wine-growing regions, Saxony (Sachsen) and the Nahe, did not delegate any representatives to participate in this year's selection process.

The five candidates who succeed in Saturday's preliminary round will return to the stage in Neustadt an der Weinstraße on 25 September 2026 for the final decision. This marks the 78th time that the national wine title is being awarded since the institution was first introduced in 1949. The holder of the title acts as the leading promotional ambassador for the German wine sector throughout their designated term. The newly selected representative will formally succeed the reigning titleholder, Anna Zenz, who entered office representing the Mosel wine-growing region. The final round will test the remaining five finalists before the jury makes its ultimate choice.

Title structure and candidate dynamics

The participation of both female and male contestants determines the specific formal title that will be conferred at the conclusion of the event. If a female contestant wins the final on 25 September, she will receive the traditional title of German Wine Queen (Weinkönigin). Should the male candidate triumph in the final vote, he will claim the inaugural title of German Wine King (Deutscher Weinkönig). The dual naming convention reflects the ongoing role of the institution, which has served as a central marketing entity for German winemakers for over seven decades. The outcome on 25 September will decide whether a new Wine Queen is crowned or the first male Wine King takes office.
