German pilgrim cyclist dies after 30-metre fall on Camino de Santiago route in Lugo
A German woman in her 30s cycling the Camino de Santiago fell 30 metres from a path in Maariz, Mondoñedo, on Saturday afternoon. Her companion witnessed the fall and is receiving psychological support.
What happened
On Saturday afternoon a German pilgrim in her 30s was cycling a section of the Camino de Santiago near Maariz, in the municipality of Mondoñedo (Lugo). She fell from a steep drop of approximately 30 metres. Her companion, also around 30 years old, witnessed the accident. Both were making the pilgrimage by bicycle.
Emergency response
The 112 emergency service was alerted and coordinated the response. Urxencias Sanitarias de Galicia-061 dispatched medical personnel, while firefighters from Barreiros and traffic officers from the Guardia Civil were also sent to the scene. Despite the rapid deployment, the cyclist died from her injuries.
Psychological support for the companion
Because the companion saw the fall, specialised psychological care was activated through the Colexio Oficial de Psicoloxía de Galicia. The professional college provides crisis intervention protocols for witnesses of traumatic events.
Investigation
The Guardia Civil de Tráfico is investigating the exact circumstances of the fall. Early information from 112 indicates the victim lost control on the path and went over the edge. The stretch of the Camino de Santiago where the accident occurred runs through the parish of Maariz, a rural area in the municipality of Mondoñedo. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two pilgrims.
