German Farmers Report Low Harvest Yields as Analysts Confirm Grocery Supplies Remain Stable

Drought and pest damage have reduced German crop yields across winter wheat and rapeseed, but market analysts confirm that food supplies remain secure despite selective price increases.

Drought and pest pressure cut yields

On Tuesday, the German Farmers' Association (Deutscher Bauernverband) published an assessment detailing disappointing crop yields across Germany following weeks of elevated temperatures and scarce rainfall. Losses have centered on southern and western regions, where deficient soil moisture caused widespread yield declines and localized crop failures.

Particularly in southern and western Germany, a lack of precipitation has led to poor yields and even crop failures for individual crops.

— Joachim Rukwied

Winter wheat, the nation's primary cereal crop, experienced notable losses alongside winter rapeseed, which suffered additional damage from pest infestations. Potato yields are projected to settle at average to below-average volumes. Even fields utilizing artificial irrigation systems are barely expected to reach average harvest levels. In arid areas across the south, dry conditions have stopped grass regrowth following first mowing, creating feed shortages for livestock.

Retail supply and product price shifts

Agricultural market analysts maintain that agricultural shortfalls will not lead to empty grocery shelves. Judith Dittrich, an analyst at the Agricultural Market Information Company (Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft), noted that distribution networks remain adequately stocked to meet domestic demand.

Selective price increases are appearing across different food categories. Salad cucumber prices have already risen noticeably compared to the previous year, while potato price increases are also evident. The 2026 apple harvest is smaller than the successful yield of 2025, though expected price increases will materialize only after existing storage reserves are depleted. In bakeries, Dittrich does not anticipate significant price jumps stemming from grain harvest shortfalls.

In this sector there are many processes between the grain harvest and the sale of bread, so the effect of the harvest on consumer prices is smaller.

— Judith Dittrich

Processing expenditures, particularly energy costs during manufacturing, represent a far larger share of retail bakery prices than the cost of raw grain.

Long-term food inflation and consumer behavior

Retail food prices have accumulated substantial increases over recent years. Figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt) show that prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages climbed 32.6% between July 2021 and July 2026. Over the same span, general consumer price inflation in Germany reached 21.5%.

Despite longer-term inflation, aggregate grocery prices currently remain slightly lower than 2025 levels. Barbara Kopske, a market researcher at Nielsen IQ, explained that shoppers continue to manage grocery budgets through specific purchasing patterns.

In the aggregate, food prices are currently slightly below the previous year's level.

— Barbara Kopske

Kopske identified high promotional discount shares, stronger demand for private-label products, and regular visits to discount grocers as key factors keeping total food costs in check. Price trajectories diverge across departments: dairy product prices have fallen, whereas frozen food prices have risen, with smaller agricultural yields expected to maintain upward pressure on frozen goods.
