French Open 2026: Defending champion Coco Gauff stunned by Anastasia Potapova in third-round thriller
Reigning champion Coco Gauff became the latest top seed to fall at Roland Garros, losing a three-set battle to Austria's Anastasia Potapova in the third round on Saturday.
The upset on Chatrier
Defending French Open champion Coco Gauff was eliminated in the third round on Saturday, losing to Austria's Anastasia Potapova 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4 after 2 hours and 37 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The American fourth seed, who beat Aryna Sabalenka in last year's final, came into Roland Garros without a title in 2026 and saw her title defense end in dramatic fashion. Potapova, seeded 28th, fought back from a set down to claim the biggest win of her career.
I'm cramping a little bit but it's OK, it's all good. I don't have any words now, I'm extremely happy.
A tournament of shocks
Gauff's exit continues a week of stunning upsets in Paris. On the men's side, world number one Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic both failed to survive the first week. The women's draw has been equally volatile: three of the world's top five have now been eliminated, following first-round defeats for Jessica Pegula (5th) and a second-round exit for Elena Rybakina (2nd). A brand new winner is guaranteed in the men's draw.
- Jessica Pegula (5th seed) loses in first round
- Elena Rybakina (2nd seed) loses in second round
- Jannik Sinner (1st seed) and Novak Djokovic eliminated in men's draw
- Coco Gauff (4th seed) loses in third round
How the match unfolded
Potapova seized an early advantage in the deciding set, racing to a 3-1 lead before Gauff fought back to level at 3-3. The set remained on serve until the final game, when the American lost her delivery at 5-4 to hand Potapova the victory. The Austrian's defensive resilience troubled Gauff throughout, with both players engaging in bruising baseline rallies that left Potapova clutching her shoulder after the match.
The fight we could show, both of us - Coco is such a champion and I respect her so much. I'm unbelievably proud of myself that I stayed there, that I was fighting until the last point.
What's next
Potapova equals her best Roland Garros result, having also reached the fourth round in 2024. She will face Russian 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya for a place in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Kalinskaya advanced earlier on Saturday with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 victory over Colombia's Camila Osorio. For Gauff, the premature defeat adds to a series of early exits at majors, following a first-round loss at Wimbledon last year and a fourth-round departure at the US Open.
