US ambassador in Bucharest marks 250 years of American independence, hails Romania's NATO role
Ambassador Darryl Nirenberg used the July 4 anniversary to stress shared values and Romania's contributions to security on NATO's eastern flank, while a series of events in the capital celebrated the milestone.
Ambassador's message
On July 4, 2026, US Ambassador to Romania Darryl Nirenberg issued a message marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. He recalled the 56 patriots who gathered in Philadelphia in 1776 to sign the Declaration of Independence, a moment President Trump called "the greatest political journey in human history." Nirenberg described the American project as a living story shaped by generations, both at home and abroad.
Freedom 250 campaign
The US Embassy in Bucharest officially launched the "Freedom 250" campaign, part of a global effort to celebrate the founding ideals of liberty, democracy, and independence. Nirenberg said the campaign is an invitation to build on shared freedom, addressing young innovators, entrepreneurs, and technology specialists in Romania. "The next chapter of our alliance belongs to you," he added.
Shared values and strategic partnership
The ambassador highlighted the deep ties between the two nations, anchored in "the fundamental values of Western civilization, faith, family, and hard work." He said the strategic partnership rests on a common commitment to regional security, economic growth, and democratic resilience.
Romania's significant contributions to global security and prosperity embody the principle of 'Peace through strength' on NATO's eastern flank. In addition to consistently exceeding defense spending targets, our joint pioneering efforts in next-generation civilian nuclear technology and developing energy resources in the Black Sea ensure that our economic sovereignty is based on innovation and independence.
Celebrations in Bucharest
The anniversary has been marked by a series of events. On June 14, Flag Day, the embassy hosted an American-style event with burgers. A reception on June 24 featured the US anthem, fireworks, a large cake with the American flag, and a speech by the ambassador. Nirenberg told guests that the legacy of the founding fathers "was built to endure, to guide and to inspire nations dedicated to freedom, as it inspired Romanians 36 years ago." The Romanian Air Force conducted a flyover, and the George Enescu Philharmonic performed a concert titled "America 250, Tribute to John Williams" at the Romanian Athenaeum.
No one captures the boundless spirit of imagination like John Williams. For generations of children in the US, John Williams was the composer of the soundtrack of childhood. His musical themes transported us to a galaxy far, far away, or to a world of wizards, and brought dinosaurs back to life. His music awakens a sense of wonder and curiosity, captures the American spirit of adventure, and inspires us to dream of great things.
An illumination program has lit up several emblematic buildings in Bucharest in the colors of the American flag, running through July 4.
