France and Morocco set for tense World Cup quarter-final as authorities tighten security
French authorities gear up for the high-stakes match on July 9, with reinforced police presence and calls for calm from ministers.
A high-stakes quarter-final
France will face Morocco tonight at 22:00 in a World Cup quarter-final that French authorities have flagged as high risk. The match, part of the 2026 tournament, arrives after Morocco's previous games were already classified as at risk by the Interior Ministry. Large gatherings are expected across several cities, the minister's entourage confirmed on Thursday.
Reinforced security measures
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez sent a telegram on July 1 to all prefects and police commanders demanding a reinforcement of security arrangements. The directive covers the entire final phase of the competition, with special attention to matches played by Morocco, Algeria and Turkey. The National Directorate of Public Security had earlier warned of possible disturbances nationwide, citing past incidents of motorized rodeos, fireworks and spontaneous street gatherings.
Aucun débordement ne devra être toléré.
Call for calm and responsibility
Sports Minister Marina Ferrari, speaking on Franceinfo, urged everyone to "take responsibility" and keep the evening a sports celebration. She added that clear instructions had been sent to prefectures to intervene quickly and tolerate no disturbances, including possible bans on public alcohol sales. Paris has opted to extend terrace opening hours until 02:00 rather than create a designated fan zone, an idea the mayor discussed with Ferrari.
J'en appelle à la responsabilité de chacun, il faut que ça reste une fête du sport.
Strain on security forces around National Day
The semi-finals on July 14 and 15 coincide with France's Fête Nationale and commemorations of the 2016 Nice attack. Nuñez noted that security forces will already be heavily mobilised, adding pressure to an already stretched policing schedule.
