Météo-France placed seven departments in southern France on orange heatwave vigilance on Saturday, 5 September 2026. The alert initially covered Ardèche, Aude, Drôme, Gard, Hérault, and Pyrénées-Orientales on Friday afternoon, with Vaucluse added to the orange tier beginning at midday on Saturday. A meteorological pattern combining high atmospheric pressure with a cut-off low over the Iberian Peninsula is channeling hot subtropical air northward into France through atmospheric compression.
Forecaster Sébastien Léas described the timing of the alert as unusual for late summer:
It has only happened once to trigger an orange heatwave vigilance in September.
Friday temperature records fall across the country
By 16:30 on Friday, 4 September, weather stations across France had broken or tied 248 temperature records. The highest values appeared along the Mediterranean basin and in the southwest, where Banca in Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Lézignan-Corbières in Aude both reached 39.4°C. Argeliers recorded 39.3°C, while Limoux and Salindres reached 38.1°C. In Toulouse, the temperature reached 37.5°C, surpassing the city's previous September record of 35.3°C set in 1966.
Abnormally high readings extended into northern and mountainous areas. Strasbourg in eastern France registered a new September maximum of 33.8°C. In the Alps, Bourg-Saint-Maurice measured 34.7°C, Annecy-Meythet recorded 32.4°C, and Chamonix reached 31.5°C at higher elevation.

Weekend heat peak and northward expansion
Warm conditions persisted overnight into Saturday, with Perpignan recording nearly 30°C and Narbonne at 26°C by 5:00 a.m. Saturday afternoon forecasts project maximum temperatures of 39°C in Perpignan and 38°C in Marseille, while northern regions remain cooler with values between 20°C and 25°C near the English Channel.
Météo-France expects the heatwave to peak on Sunday, 6 September, with localized maximums between 39°C and 40°C in Occitanie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and the Rhône valley. The warm air mass will also push northward across the country on Sunday, bringing temperatures between 30°C and 32°C to Brittany, Normandy, and Île-de-France, and reaching up to 34°C in Maine-et-Loire.

Weather models project a distinct temperature drop beginning early next week, which will ease conditions across all affected departments.
