France survives Paraguay onslaught to reach World Cup quarterfinals
A Kylian Mbappé penalty and a composed defensive display carried France past a combative Paraguay side, but the match will be remembered for the referee's failure to control a barrage of fouls.
A bruising encounter in Philadelphia
France advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay in a match that descended into a physical battle at Lincoln Financial Field. The South Americans, who had eliminated Germany in the group stage, employed aggressive tactics from the start, committing 13 fouls and repeatedly provoking French players. The heat in Philadelphia added to the intensity, with temperatures turning the stadium into a "Glutofen" (furnace).
I think it was important for us to experience a match like this and see how we handle it. We showed that we can play more than just attacking football.
Referee loses control
Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev faced fierce criticism for his handling of the match. Paraguay received no yellow cards despite numerous heavy challenges, while France collected three. A co-trainer for Paraguay was booked after the final whistle. Referee expert Patrick Ittrich called it "the worst performance at this World Cup," and commentator Wolff-Christoph Fuss likened the game to a "bar brawl." Zlatan Ibrahimovic, working as a pundit, said he saw four red-card offences by Paraguay.
The players from Paraguay are very forceful in the direction of unsportsmanlike conduct. The referee let everything slide for far too long. In terms of yellow and red cards, the referee was overwhelmed in this match.
Mbappé penalty decides it
The decisive moment came in the 70th minute when VAR intervened after Diego Gomez brought down substitute Desire Doue in the box. Tantashev awarded a penalty, and Mbappé converted calmly. It was France's first goal of the tournament not from open play. Paraguay's Matias Galarza, who had struck Mbappé with a fist earlier, was at the centre of several flashpoints, including a late altercation with Michael Olise that earned the Frenchman a yellow card.

France keeps composure
Despite the provocations, Didier Deschamps' side avoided retaliation that could have led to suspensions. Mbappé later said the team was willing to "get our hands dirty" but remained the better side. Rayan Cherki expressed disbelief at the foul count, asking "30, 40?" and noting the lack of cards. Deschamps praised his team's attitude, calling the win "a great milestone" and highlighting their ability to handle a tricky South American opponent.
I have a united team with an excellent attitude. We had to deal with some difficulties – like many other teams – but we did what was necessary.
Quarterfinal against Morocco awaits
France will face Morocco in the quarterfinals on 9 July at 22:00. The match promises a different challenge after the bruising encounter with Paraguay. The 1998 World Cup also saw France eliminate Paraguay in the round of 16, with Deschamps on the pitch that day. This time, his team's discipline under fire may prove just as valuable as their attacking talent.
