The 23rd edition of the Hubert Jerzy Wagner Memorial began on 28 August 2026 at the Tauron Arena in Krakow, bringing together four men's national volleyball teams for their final competitive test before continental championships. Host nation Poland, reigning Olympic champions France, the United States, and Slovenia compete in the three-day round-robin tournament running through Sunday. Poland entered the competition following a training camp in Zakopane after defending their FIVB Volleyball Nations League title against the Americans. France entered seeking form after missing the Nations League knockout stage, while Slovenia arrived as recent bronze medalists from that tournament.

France sweeps the United States

In the opening match of the tournament, France secured a 3-0 victory against the United States with set scores of 28-26, 25-21, and 25-23. The American squad coached by Karch Kiraly built an early 17-13 advantage in the opening set behind effective serving from Jake Hanes. The United States held two set points at 24-22, but Andrea Giani's French team forced extra points and won the frame when Theo Faure converted an attack off the block. France carried that momentum into the second set, pulling ahead after an ace by setter Antoine Brizard and closing the frame with a defensive block. Mathis Henno finalized the straight-sets win in the third set by converting a match point attack after the United States had leveled the score at 21-21.

Poland outlasts Slovenia in five sets

Host Poland faced Slovenia in the second match of the opening day, securing a victory in a five-set tie-break. Slovenia opened the match with a 4-1 lead after blocking Tomasz Fornal, and Poland suffered a roster setback at 5-7 when middle blocker Bartlomiej Lemanski sustained an ankle injury upon landing from a block attempt. Lemanski left the court immediately, prompting adjustments in the Polish lineup. Opposite hitter Bartlomiej Boladz led the recovery with 10 points in the first set, including an ace to level at 11-11. Outside hitter Wilfredo Leon sealed the opening set 26-24 with an ace, but Slovenia answered in the second set behind opposite Nik Mujanovic to take the frame 25-21.

Tactical adjustments and tie-break finish

Polish head coach Nikola Grbic adjusted his lineup for the third set, substituting Kamil Semeniuk onto the court in place of Leon. Poland opened the third frame with a 6-1 run and extended their lead to 19-12 following an attack by Boladz, holding off a late Slovenian rally to regain the overall match lead. Slovenia answered in the fourth set, utilizing float serves from Jan Kozamernik and attacks from Mujanovic to counter Polish leads created by substitute Artur Szalpuk. Slovenia clinched the fourth set 25-23 despite two late service aces by Jakub Majchrzak, forcing a deciding fifth set. Poland recovered control in the tie-break to finalize the opening day victory before their upcoming weekend fixtures.
