Trump tests Hormuz pause as courts, quakes and corporate breakups jolt governments and markets

The day’s news turned on fragile systems: a sea lane, a court doctrine, a heat-stressed railway and a rescue operation under broken concrete. Politics and markets both hunted for signs of control, and found plenty of improvisation instead.

Three Madrid house fires in ten hours leave four injured and 13 treated, one man in serious condition

A series of three house fires across Madrid within ten hours left four people injured and 13 others treated for smoke inhalation, with the most serious blaze destroying a third-floor flat in the Latina district.

Latina district blaze

A fire broke out around 7:15 a.m. on Monday in a third-floor flat at number 3 Salorino Street in Madrid's Latina district. The flames destroyed the apartment completely and broke through the facade, filling four floors with smoke. Ten fire crews and municipal police responded, evacuating residents and ventilating the building. One man in his thirties was found unconscious inside and taken to La Paz hospital intubated with severe inhalation burns; he remains in serious condition. A 92-year-old woman was also sent to hospital as a precaution after inhaling smoke, while 12 other residents were treated on site for nervous crisis and smoke inhalation and later discharged.

Earlier fires in Ferraz and Getafe

The Latina fire capped a busy night for Madrid emergency services. At 10 p.m. the previous evening, a small fire started in the bathroom of a flat on Ferraz Street. A 38-year-old man suffered second-degree burns to his face and arm and a more serious inhalation burn; he was taken to La Paz hospital in serious condition. Two fire crews extinguished the blaze, which did not spread to other rooms.

Later, in the early hours of Monday, a fire engulfed a semi-detached house at 42 Tejera Negra Street in Perales del Río, Getafe. Nine fire crews from the Madrid Community arrived to find the fire well developed and breaking through the roof. They prevented it from spreading to adjacent homes. A 58-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman were injured by burns and treated by Summa 112.

Response and investigation

Across the three incidents, a total of four people were hospitalised with injuries, and 13 others received medical attention for smoke inhalation or anxiety. The cause of the Latina fire remains under investigation, though authorities have ruled out a gas explosion. The flat was completely destroyed, and an interior wall collapsed after a detonation, but officials have not linked it to the fire's origin.
