Catalan police have detained four Spanish suspects in the August 2026 beating of 21-year-old Nicola Maggiotto outside a Barcelona club, though the court released them after they declined to testify.
Police action and court release in Barcelona
Officers from the Mossos d'Esquadra detained four Spanish youths in Barcelona on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, in connection with the assault of an Italian citizen. Following the operation, the four suspects were placed in police detention cells where they remained overnight. On the morning of Thursday, 1 October 2026, the detainees were moved under police escort to the holding facilities of Barcelona's investigative courts, the Juzgados de Instrucción. During their formal appearance before the judicial authorities, all four suspects exercised their statutory right to remain silent and declined to answer questions. The magistrate subsequently authorized their release from custody while keeping the judicial investigation open. The development was confirmed by Alessio Castellano and Monica Cornaviera, the Italian attorneys representing the victim's family.
The assault at Port Fòrum and medical recovery
The physical attack occurred in the early hours during the night between 12 and 13 August 2026 outside a nightlife venue in Barcelona's Port Fòrum district. The victim, 21-year-old Nicola Maggiotto from Asolo in Italy's Treviso province, was beaten by a group of youths as he exited the premises. The violent blows resulted in traumatic injuries that forced medical personnel to place the young Italian into a medically induced coma for several days. Maggiotto spent nearly four weeks undergoing intensive treatment and care at Barcelona's Hospital del Mar. After his condition stabilized sufficiently for medical transport, he was repatriated to Italy on 8 September 2026, nearly one month after the altercation.

Identification of suspects and juvenile status
Legal representatives for the Maggiotto family outlined the scope of the criminal inquiry, which currently encompasses eight suspects in total. Law enforcement officials have identified six of the eight individuals believed to have taken part in the group beating. Among the eight individuals implicated in the case, two are minors and fall under the specific legal framework governing juvenile offenders in Spain. The four people arrested on 30 September 2026 represent the adult members of the group who have been located and processed by Catalan authorities. Police investigators are continuing their inquiries to establish the formal identities of the remaining two suspects.
Forensic evidence, DNA testing, and seized devices
As part of the active criminal inquiry, the Mossos d'Esquadra have deployed forensic testing and digital analysis to corroborate the physical accounts. Spanish police officers confiscated the mobile phones of the four arrested youths to examine communication records and geolocation data from the period surrounding the altercation. Furthermore, forensic specialists are running comparative DNA tests against biological traces recovered from the shirt Maggiotto wore on the night he was attacked. Investigators will cross-reference the genetic material lifted from the fabric with biological samples taken from the suspects to verify physical contact. These laboratory findings and digital extractions will be submitted to the investigating magistrate in Barcelona as the case advances.
