Three drownings and a motorcycle crash kill four men across the Porto region in under three hours
Three men drowned in separate water‑related incidents along the Porto coast on Friday evening, and an 18‑year‑old motorcyclist died in Valongo, bringing the night’s toll to four fatalities in less than three hours.
A cluster of fatal accidents struck the greater Porto area on the night of 12 June 2026, claiming the lives of four men in distinct circumstances. The incidents were spread across a three‑hour window and involved both the coastline and inland roads.
A deadly evening on the water
Authorities received the first alert at 19:50, when a man aged about 50 jumped into the Douro River near the Cais de Banhos recreation area. The jump was from a low height, but he struck rocks and was pulled unconscious from the water. Maritime Police began basic life support, and INEM later provided advanced care, yet death was declared at the scene.
Despite being a jump of little height, the victim hit the rocks and remained inert under water.
Rocks and waves claim two more
At 20:10, a roughly 40‑year‑old man fell while walking on the rocks at Praia do Ourigo in Porto. Bystanders rendered first aid before emergency crews arrived, but he was already in cardiorespiratory arrest. The commander of the Porto Captaincy confirmed the details.
The alert was given at 20:10 for a man who fell in a rocky area while out walking.
Shortly before 22:00, a 54‑year‑old man entered the water at Praia do Cabo do Mundo in Matosinhos. He disappeared and a search was launched at 22:08 by the local Maritime Police and the Leixões life‑saving station. Fishermen on foot later spotted his body among rocks at the tideline. INEM pronounced him dead on site.
Motorcycle crash in Valongo
Almost simultaneously, at around 22:10, an 18‑year‑old from Rebordosa, Paredes, lost control of his motorcycle in Campo, Valongo. He was taken in serious condition to Hospital de São João in Porto but did not survive. The GNR’s road‑accident investigation unit is examining the circumstances.

Response and investigations

The Portuguese maritime authority and the Douro Captaincy are compiling reports on the three water‑related deaths. No connection between the events has been suggested; they are being treated as separate accidents.
