Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who oversaw Qatar's transformation into a global gas and diplomatic powerhouse, died Sunday at age 74, the Amiri Diwan said. No cause of death was immediately disclosed.
Death announcement
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former emir of Qatar, died on Sunday morning at the age of 74, the Amiri Diwan announced. The statement was issued by the highest government office in the country.
With hearts steadfast in faith in divine will and destiny, the office of the Emir mourns the great loss to the nation of the late – may God have mercy on him – His Highness the Father-Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away this morning.
The authorities did not disclose the cause of death, nor have they yet released details of official mourning ceremonies.
The Father Emir’s reign
Sheikh Hamad took power in 1995 and ruled Qatar for 18 years until he voluntarily handed over the throne to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013. His reign was marked by an extraordinary economic expansion fuelled by the nation’s vast natural gas reserves. Qatar became one of the world’s richest countries per capita and established itself as a significant diplomatic player, investor, and media centre.
During his tenure, the groundwork was laid for the Qatar National Vision 2030, a long-term development plan aimed at diversifying the economy beyond hydrocarbons and securing sustainable growth. International investments, the expansion of media influence, and a proactive foreign policy were all hallmarks of his time as emir.
- Takes power as Emir of Qatar.
- Abdicates voluntarily, handing power to his son Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
- Dies at age 74, announced by Amiri Diwan.
Succession
The 2013 abdication in favour of his son Tamim was unusual for the Gulf region, where transfers of power often occur only upon death. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the current emir, has continued many of his father’s policies.
Reaction and mourning
So far, no further details about state mourning or funeral arrangements have been published. The Amiri Diwan’s initial statement focused on the spiritual loss, describing the former emir as the nation’s “Father-Emir.” The announcement has triggered an outpouring of messages from across the Gulf and beyond, though official protocols for memorials remain pending.
