The attack
Five people were stabbed at New York's Penn Station on Sunday evening, according to the city's fire department. The attack occurred shortly after 19:00 local time in one of the busiest transit hubs in the United States, which sits directly beneath Madison Square Garden. A suspect was taken into custody by police shortly after the incident.

Victims and response
The injured, all civilians, were transported to Bellevue Hospital. The fire department reported one person suffered serious injuries, two had moderate injuries, and two sustained minor injuries. A photographer at the scene afterward saw gauze, medical gloves and blood on the floor near tracks 5 and 6, where police cordoned off the area.
Suspect details
Law enforcement told CBS News that the stabbing was a random act of violence. ABC News reported the suspect was emotionally disturbed and was arrested by Amtrak police. Sources cited by local media also indicated the man may have had emotional or psychological problems. One source told ABC News the attacker was believed to be homeless.
Heightened security context
The stabbing occurred as New York prepared for two major sporting events. Madison Square Garden will host games three and four of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs on Monday and Wednesday. MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will host its first World Cup match on Saturday.
US President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend Monday's NBA game, having accepted an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan. Security had already been enhanced ahead of the two events. City officials announced a no-bag policy and cancelled an outdoor watch party outside the arena due to Trump's presence. Mayor Zohran Mamdani will also attend the game.
A police officer was assaulted as authorities sought to contain the crowd, and he called the behavior unacceptable.
Prior unrest
Before the stabbing, New York officials had already cancelled an outdoor watch party set for Monday outside the Garden. Thousands of spectators had gathered at an intersection outside the venue on Friday for a game two watch party. New York authorities said 26 people were arrested after some fans turned rowdy. Mayor Mamdani said a police officer was assaulted during efforts to contain the crowd.
Station significance
Penn Station is the busiest rail and subway transportation center in the country, with an average of approximately 600,000 passengers passing through daily. The station will also serve as a transit point for the World Cup, connecting fans to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which will host eight matches including the final on 19 July.
Authorities have not yet clarified whether the stabbing will affect security plans for Monday's game. New York's emergency notification system urged people to avoid the area and expect traffic delays, road closures, and mass transit disruptions.
