Eloy Room makes 15 saves, clinching historic World Cup point for Curacao in 0-0 draw with Ecuador
Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves, one shy of the World Cup record, to hold Ecuador to a 0-0 draw and earn the island nation its first-ever point at the tournament.
Room's record night
Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room stopped 15 shots on target as his side held heavily favoured Ecuador to a goalless draw in Group E. The 37-year-old, who plays for Miami FC in the USL Championship, was called into action from the third minute and never relented. His save total was the most by any goalkeeper in a 90-minute World Cup match since the statistic was first recorded in 1966, and just one short of Tim Howard's all-time record of 16 set in 2014.
Ecuador has a better team than Curaçao. But that doesn't mean it will be easy for them. We have to keep the game open as long as possible.
Coach Dick Advocaat, at 78 the oldest manager at this World Cup, reshaped his defence after a 7-1 loss to Germany, switching to a five-man back line that gave the Caribbean side far more stability. Room's performance drew comparisons with Howard's legendary display for the United States against Belgium, and his Instagram following swelled from 100,000 to over 500,000 during the match.
Ecuador's frustration
Ecuador, ranked 30th in the world and fancied by some as an outside title contender, dominated possession and territory throughout the 90 minutes. They registered 29 shots, 15 of them on target, and accumulated 3.05 expected goals without ever beating Room. Captain Enner Valencia had the clearest early chance, running through one-on-one in the third minute only to see his effort saved. Gonzalo Plata missed with a free header, Kevin Rodríguez struck the crossbar with a cross-shot, and the pressure only intensified as the match wore on.
We created enough chances to win two matches. Their goalkeeper was simply unbeatable tonight.
Earlier on Saturday, Germany beat Ivory Coast 2-1 with a stoppage-time winner from Deniz Undav, securing top spot in Group E. Ecuador, who lost their opener to Ivory Coast in the dying minutes, now face Germany needing a victory to reach the knockout stage.
What it means for Group E
The draw leaves Curaçao with one point after two matches, keeping their slim hopes of advancing alive. They must beat Ivory Coast in Philadelphia on Thursday to progress. Ecuador, with zero points, go into their final match against Germany in New York under elimination pressure. The result also confirmed Germany as group winners regardless of the final round of games.
- Room saves Enner Valencia's point-blank effort in the 3rd minute
- John Yeboah's chance for Ecuador saved in the 42nd minute
- Curacao triple chance: Leandro Bacuna, Livano Comenencia and Jurgen Locadia all denied in the 60th minute
- Deflected shot from Curacao almost snatches a late winner in the 74th minute
- Kevin Rodríguez's cross-shot hits the Ecuador crossbar
Curaçao's journey
Curaçao, an autonomous state within the Kingdom of the Netherlands with a population of just 158,000, became the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup. Over half its squad was developed in the Dutch football system. Advocaat, a former Netherlands national team manager, took charge to guide them through the Caribbean qualifying path. Their 7-1 loss to Germany in the opener threatened to overshadow the achievement, but the draw with Ecuador brought the island’s football story back into a more hopeful light.
The Dutch royal family watched from the stands in blue shirts, joining around 20,000 Ecuadorean supporters among the 68,598 crowd at Arrowhead Stadium. For Curaçao, a nation that held a goalless draw against a South American favourite, the night already belongs to Room and his record-breaking hands.
