Man on electric scooter killed by train at closed level crossing in Sitne
An approximately 50-year-old man died on Saturday morning in Wołomin County after entering a railway crossing with lowered half-barriers in front of a passenger train from Białystok to Gliwice.
Collision at the Sitne level crossing
A fatal railway accident occurred on Saturday, 22 August 2026, in the rural locality of Sitne, situated within the Jadów municipality of Wołomin County in Masovian Voivodeship. At approximately 11:10 in the morning, a man aged approximately 50 years old entered the designated railway crossing along the Mokra Wieś-Szewnica rail segment. The individual was travelling on an electric scooter when he reached the tracks. At the time of his entry, the level crossing half-barriers were fully lowered and the accompanying electronic light signals were operating normally. A passenger train travelling from Białystok to Gliwice was moving through the area at line speed. The train driver had no opportunity to bring the fast-moving train to a halt before striking the individual directly on the tracks.
Emergency response and official findings
Emergency rescue crews and police officers from the Wołomin County Police Headquarters were dispatched to the crossing immediately following reports of the collision. Despite the rapid arrival and intervention of emergency medical personnel, the 50-year-old scooter rider succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene. Law enforcement officers immediately cordoned off the rail perimeter and initiated formal evidence-gathering procedures under the supervision of the local prosecutor. As part of standard investigative protocol, police administered a breathalyzer test to the locomotive driver, which confirmed that the operator was completely sober. Investigators began cataloguing physical evidence across the rail bed and inspecting the operational condition of the warning systems.
Sub-Commissioner Olga Pinkiewicz of the Wołomin County Police Headquarters confirmed the fatality and the state of the crossing barriers in an official communication.
I confirm that at around 11 o'clock in the village of Sitne in the Jadów municipality, an accident occurred. A man who was crossing the tracks with closed half-barriers was hit by a train.
Rail traffic disruptions and service recovery
The collision and subsequent emergency response resulted in widespread disruptions to regional and intercity passenger rail transport across the Masovian rail network. Railway dispatchers immediately halted train traffic through the Sitne sector to allow forensic specialists and emergency units to conduct on-site procedures. Due to the track closure, PKP Intercity passenger train IC 1422, known as Korfanty, was cancelled along the route section between Łochów station and Warszawa Wschodnia station. Railway management later reopened one rail line to allow restricted single-track traffic while clearing operations continued on the adjacent track. Standard two-track train movements were officially restored before 15:00 on Saturday afternoon.

Prosecutorial inquiry into crossing circumstances
Police investigators working under prosecutorial direction have opened a formal inquiry to establish why the 50-year-old man entered the crossing while the barriers and signals were engaged. Technicians and officers secured physical evidence from the scene, examined the operational logs of the Mokra Wieś-Szewnica crossing, and took formal statements from the train crew. The investigation focuses on determining whether visual obstructions, equipment timing, or individual actions contributed to the fatal crossing. All documentation and forensic findings from the Sitne collision site will be compiled into a case file overseen by the regional prosecutor's office.
