
25-year-old man fatally stabbed at Cais do Sodré in Lisbon, suspect at large
A 25-year-old man died after being stabbed in the torso near a kiosk at Jardim do Cais do Sodré in Lisbon on 16 August 2026. The suspect fled on foot and remains at large.
The attack
A 25-year-old man was stabbed in the torso on Sunday, 16 August 2026, near a kiosk at the Jardim do Cais do Sodré in central Lisbon. According to Diário de Notícias and SAPO, the stabbing occurred at approximately 12:16. The PSP arrived to find the victim already unconscious; he received emergency medical assistance at the scene before being transported to Hospital de São José in grave condition.
JN reports that both the victim and the suspect were homeless and that the two men had begun arguing for reasons still unknown before one drew a bladed weapon and stabbed the other. Other sources do not specify the relationship between the two men. Expresso notes only that it is not yet known whether there was a prior connection between them.
Death and medical response
Despite the efforts of medical teams at Hospital de São José, the victim did not survive his injuries. The time of death is reported differently across sources: Diário de Notícias and one SAPO article cite the PSP confirming death at 13:12, while a second SAPO article states the death was declared at approximately 13:30.

Suspect's flight
The suspect, described as another man, fled immediately after the attack on foot toward Terreiro do Paço. SAPO reports he was later seen entering the Baixa-Chiado metro station. As of the latest reports, he had not been captured.
Investigation
The PSP initially responded to the scene and then activated the Polícia Judiciária, which has taken over the investigation. Inspectors are conducting initial inquiries, collecting evidence and reviewing CCTV footage that could help identify and locate the suspect. Expresso reports that a witness who was present at the scene and observed the assault is being questioned by authorities.
The circumstances that motivated the attack are still being determined. The case has drawn attention to security in public areas of central Lisbon, a zone frequented by residents and visitors throughout the day.
