French tourist dies after diving from rocks at Falasarna beach in Crete
A French tourist was found dead on Saturday after apparently diving from rocks at the remote Falasarna beach, leaving behind his wife and two sons.
Discovery
On Saturday afternoon, a French tourist was found unconscious in a rocky, hard-to-reach area of Falasarna beach, near the archaeological site at Kissamos, Chania. He had multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene before being transported to Chania Hospital.
The fatal dive
The man was visiting the site with his family (his wife and two sons), according to reports from ERT Chania. After touring the archaeological area, they decided to swim. Investigators believe he attempted a dive from the rocks on the far side of the beach and struck his head fatally on the rocks. He suffered multiple body injuries along with the fatal head wound.
Rescue effort
His mother notified authorities via the 112 emergency line, triggering a large-scale search-and-rescue operation. Sixteen firefighters from the Chania and Kastelli fire services, along with special EMODE and EMAK rescue units, and an ambulance from EKAB, were mobilized to locate and extract the body from the rugged terrain.
Conflicting age reports
Greek media outlets diverge on the victim's age: some report he was 31 years old, while one report lists him as 45. All sources agree he was a French national on a family holiday.
