Overnight crash on Boesebruecke

A fatal car crash occurred in northern Berlin during the early morning hours of Saturday, 19 September 2026. At approximately 2:45 a.m., a vehicle travelling eastward from the Wedding district towards Prenzlauer Berg lost control on the Boesebruecke. The vehicle veered off the roadway, struck the curb and two bollards, and launched completely over the bridge railing before plunging into the railway cutting below. It landed directly in the track bed of the Bornholmer Strasse S-Bahn station, coming to rest upside down across the rails.

As a result, the vehicle reportedly struck the edge of the roadway and two bollards and subsequently drove onto the bridge railing of the Boesebruecke, after which the vehicle was thrown into the track bed of the Bornholmer Strasse S-Bahn station.

Vehicle trajectory and site evidence

Physical evidence at the scene indicated that the black car travelled along the perimeter before vaulting the bridge structure. Scatterings of automotive parts were found across the roadway, including debris near a lamppost that the vehicle struck during the incident. Marks along the bridge barrier showed that the car scraped against the structure for a sustained distance, which ruptured the engine and fuel tank. The 1.30-meter-high railing itself remained undamaged at the exact point where the vehicle plunged downward into the rail cutting. An attending police officer on Saturday morning stated that the car flew entirely over the 1.30-meter barrier without contacting it at the drop point.

First responders arrived at the Bornholmer Strasse station shortly after the crash and extricated the driver from the heavily damaged, inverted vehicle. Emergency medical teams initiated resuscitation measures on site, but the individual succumbed to injuries and died at the scene. The incident caused immediate shutdowns across northern Berlin road and public transport networks. Bornholmer Strasse was closed to vehicular traffic in both directions between Juelicher Strasse and Malmoeer Strasse. The Berlin fire department disconnected the traction power supply along the railway corridor to ensure safety for recovery crews. Rail service on the S-Bahn network faced extensive alterations, with lines S1 and S25 fully suspended between Gesundbrunnen and Wollankstrasse. Trains on lines S2, S8, and S85 continued operating on modified itineraries but bypassed Bornholmer Strasse without stopping. Line S1 operated shortened services between Wannsee and Gesundbrunnen and between Schönholz and Oranienburg, running at 20-minute intervals between Nordbahnhof and Gesundbrunnen as well as between Schönholz and Frohnau.
