German middle-distance runner Robert Farken won the gold medal in the men's mile at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. Farken finished ahead of United States middle-distance runner Yared Nuguse, who had been regarded as the slight pre-race favourite for the world title. Nuguse took second place to earn the silver medal, crossing the line 0.53 seconds behind Farken. Third place and the bronze medal went to Ruben Querinjean of Luxembourg, who completed the course 0.97 seconds behind the winning German runner. The final results produced narrow gaps at the top, with less than one full second separating the three medal winners over the 1.60934-kilometer street course. Farken's finishing sprint in Copenhagen prevented the favoured American runner from securing gold and placed Germany atop the podium.

Rebound from European championship disappointment

The gold medal in Copenhagen came after a frustrating campaign for Farken at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Held more than a month before the world road championships, the Birmingham meet saw Farken enter the 1,500 meters with high competitive expectations. Despite his ambitions to challenge for a continental medal, he was unable to mount a podium challenge during the final. Farken had to settle for a disappointing ninth-place finish in Birmingham, leaving the European championships without a medal. The road race victory in Denmark served as an immediate recovery from that ninth-place outcome, translating his track ability into a global road title.

National mile record and summer progression

Prior to his victory in Copenhagen, Farken established himself as Germany's fastest runner at the distance by setting the national record. At the end of July, the Leipzig runner competed in London and recorded a time of 3:46.82 minutes over the mile. That performance set the existing German national record and proved his competitive form heading into the late summer season. While the tactical nature of the Copenhagen street race resulted in a slower time of 3:51.80 minutes than his London track mark, Farken navigated the 70-athlete pack to take the win.
