Romanian F-16 destroys marine drone near Neptun Deep gas platform in Black Sea
A Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed an unmanned naval drone near the Neptun Deep gas platform, roughly 80 nautical miles east of Constanța, following an alert from a commercial vessel on 20 August 2026.
Interception near Neptun Alpha
On Thursday morning, 20 August 2026, a Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jet intercepted and destroyed a maritime drone drifting near the Neptun Alpha offshore platform in the Black Sea. A commercial vessel first reported the small naval drone at approximately 06:28, observing it inside Romania's exclusive economic zone roughly 80 nautical miles east of Constanța. The device was positioned a few hundred meters from ongoing natural gas extraction operations in the Neptun Deep perimeter, an area where several hundred workers were present.
Upon receiving the alert from the Romanian Coast Guard, the Ministry of National Defence established a dedicated command cell. The Romanian military coordinated with NATO command structures, requesting authorization to manage the operational response nationally. In coordination with President Nicușor Dan, defence officials authorized military action to protect personnel on the platform and secure energy infrastructure. Two Romanian F-16 fighter aircraft were scrambled from base with direct orders to engage and neutralize the vessel.
Cannon strike and ordnance verification
One of the two F-16 fighters engaged the target directly, firing its onboard cannon to destroy the drone in the water. The Ministry of National Defence reported that the strike eliminated the drone without damaging the platform or injuring personnel. Following the interception, a Coast Guard vessel transported an explosive ordnance disposal team from the Romanian Naval Forces to the coordinates to conduct technical inspections.
- A commercial vessel spots the drifting marine drone near the Neptun Alpha platform.
- The Coast Guard alerts authorities and the Ministry of National Defence establishes a command cell.
- Two Romanian F-16 fighters scramble and one destroys the drone with its onboard cannon.
- A Naval Forces EOD team deploys by ship while officials confirm the drone is not Ukrainian.
Official accounts differed regarding the drone payload. Interim Defence Minister Radu Miruță initially announced that the craft carried explosives, though the Ministry of National Defence did not confirm an explosive charge in its formal release. Miruță subsequently updated his public statement to align with the ministry's wording. Authorities also contacted Ukrainian counterparts through a recently established direct communication channel, receiving official confirmation that the craft was not of Ukrainian origin.
Government reaction and security measures
President Nicușor Dan commended the Romanian military, the two fighter pilots, and the Coast Guard for executing the interception. Dan described the operation as a rapid response focused on protecting civilian workers and safeguarding offshore resources. He noted that the intervention concluded without harm to the gas facilities or the personnel operating 80 nautical miles offshore.
A race against time, in which the zero priority was protecting the lives of the people working on the platform and keeping critical infrastructure out of any potential danger.
Dan addressed regional security concerns, attributing the presence of such drones to hostile activity in the Black Sea basin and pledging continued cooperation with alliance partners.
I firmly condemn the intensification of these types of irresponsible incidents from the Russian Federation. We remain vigilant alongside NATO allies to defend ourselves and repel such provocations.
Romanian authorities and NATO surveillance units maintain monitoring across the maritime economic zone as exploration work at Neptun Deep continues.
