Chemical truck breakdown on A8 forces evacuation of 100, triggers forest fire warning
A truck carrying flammable organic peroxide broke down on the A8 motorway near Wiesensteig in southern Germany, forcing the evacuation of around 100 residents and the closure of the motorway in the Munich direction. High temperatures heightened the risk of explosion and forest fire.
What happened
A hazardous goods truck transporting organic peroxide suffered a technical defect on the A8 motorway heading towards Munich near Wiesensteig in the district of Göppingen, Baden-Württemberg, on 22 June 2026. The vehicle, loaded with a highly flammable chemical, came to a standstill, triggering a large-scale emergency response. Authorities immediately cordoned off the area and evacuated nearby residents due to the risk of an explosion and the potential for a fast-spreading forest fire in the current hot weather.
Chemical danger
Organic peroxide is a thermally unstable compound that can decompose under heat, releasing significant amounts of heat and gas, which may lead to fires or even explosions, according to the German Social Accident Insurance. The district administration of Göppingen warned that pressurised containers on the truck could ignite and discharge explosively. Because of the high ambient temperatures, the situation was assessed as posing an immediate forest fire hazard.
It is not excluded that the pressurized hazardous substance containers ignite and explosively discharge.
Evacuation and road closure
Around 100 people were evacuated from their homes in Wiesensteig and were accommodated in a local gymnasium. The A8 motorway was closed in the Munich-bound direction between the junctions Mühlhausen and Hohenstadt, and a diversion was put in place. Emergency workers from the disaster control service were deployed to care for people stuck in traffic. At 17:30 local time, an exceptional incident level was declared for the communities of Hohenstadt, Mühlhausen im Täle, and Wiesensteig.
Response measures
Firefighters initially attempted to cool the vehicle but then abandoned the effort. The truck was manoeuvred out of an area directly dangerous to the population and placed in a parking area before the Lämmerbuckeltunnel. A specialist firm has been called in to assess how the temperature of the hazardous substance develops. Approximately 250 emergency personnel are on site, including fire brigades, police, and civil protection units. A crisis team was established at the fire service control centre.
Timeline of operations
- Truck carrying organic peroxide breaks down on A8 near Wiesensteig
- Fire service attempts cooling, then stops due to risk
- Exceptional incident level declared for Hohenstadt, Mühlhausen im Täle and Wiesensteig
- A8 closed between Mühlhausen and Hohenstadt; detour set up
- 100 residents evacuated to gymnasium, 250 emergency workers on site
- Specialist firm called to assess temperature and plan removal
The current duration of the operation is uncertain. Removing the truck entirely is not technically feasible at this stage, pending expert evaluation.
