England defeat Sri Lanka by eight wickets to sweep T20 series and take world number one ranking

Series sweep and ranking shift

England completed a 3-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka on Saturday with an eight-wicket win at Old Trafford in Manchester. The victory moved England ahead of India to the number one position in the world Twenty20 rankings. Captain Harry Brook recorded his 23rd win in 26 completed matches since taking charge of the team in the summer of 2024. England finished the pursuit in 9.4 overs, winning with 62 balls to spare, the largest margin by balls remaining for England in a home T20 fixture.

Sri Lanka batting collapse

England won the toss under autumn conditions with a strong breeze blowing across Old Trafford and opted to field with an unchanged lineup from Thursday's six-wicket win in Cardiff. Sri Lanka ended their six-over powerplay at 47-2 before being dismissed for 124 in 18.5 overs, leaving seven balls unused. Opener Pathum Nissanka top-scored for the tourists with 36 runs from 24 balls before Harry Brook caught him off Will Jacks. Kamindu Mendis added 35 runs from 28 deliveries before Will Jacks caught him off Jofra Archer.

Captain Charith Asalanka was run out for 16 as Sri Lanka slumped to 83-4. Wanindu Hasaranga dislodged his own bail on seven runs swinging at an Archer delivery, and tail-ender Eshan Malinga was run out for zero after a direct throw from Liam Dawson. Sonny Baker earned Player of the Match honors with bowling figures of 2-17 across 3.5 overs. Archer claimed 2-23, Jacks finished with 2-31, and Jamie Overton conceded 15 runs while taking one wicket in his four overs. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka assessed the team's performance after the match.

A very disappointing series for us in both the major departments, batting and bowling... this is an important eye-opener for us of where we stand right now in T20 cricket comparing to the best teams in the world.

England run chase

Chasing a target of 125, England lost opener Aneurin Donald for 13 after he was stumped off Tharindu Ratnayake with the score at 22-1. Jos Buttler and Harry Brook then assembled an 85-run partnership for the second wicket, taking England to 82-1 by the end of the six-over powerplay. Brook scored 33 runs from 21 balls before being run out. Buttler, who reached 15,000 career T20 runs on Thursday, finished unbeaten on 62 runs from 32 balls. He reached his half-century in 30 balls with a six and completed the chase at 126-2 with a one-handed six. Sri Lanka bowled nine wides during the innings, with two traveling to the boundary.

Looking ahead to one-day series

Brook concluded the series as top run-scorer and player of the series. The match was watched from the stands by new Test coach Stephen Fleming. England fielded without the injured Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell, but secured their 15th consecutive T20 victory over Sri Lanka and their seventh win against the opponents in 2026. Brook reflected on the squad's collective effort across the three fixtures.

I think everybody stepped up in this series. Every game has been slightly different and we're playing the conditions extremely well.

The two teams begin a three-match one-day international series in Durham on Tuesday. With the next men's T20 World Cup and Olympic cricket tournament scheduled for 2028, England's white-ball focus shifts toward the 50-over World Cup in southern Africa in autumn 2027.
