England eliminate host Mexico in 3-2 thriller at Estadio Azteca to reach World Cup quarter-finals
Jude Bellingham's first-half double and a Harry Kane penalty sent England into the quarter-finals, ending Mexico's perfect run in front of a raucous Azteca crowd.
Build-up overshadowed by storms and security fears
A violent thunderstorm over Mexico City forced organisers to delay kick-off by an hour, repeating the pattern from Mexico's previous match against Ecuador. Lightning protocols kept players off the pitch and confined journalists to the media centre. Earlier, the Mexican football federation had considered moving the start to midday but both teams refused. The weather added to an already tense atmosphere: 7,500 police officers were deployed around Estadio Azteca, roughly one for every ten fans, after four people died in crowd celebrations following the Ecuador win. Authorities set a 25,000-person limit at the Angel of Independence monument and prepared overflow fan zones along Paseo de la Reforma.
Hosts try to unsettle England before a ball is kicked
Mexican supporters gathered outside England's team hotel in the Santa Fe district hours before the match, armed with speakers, trumpets and fireworks in a traditional Latin American "serenade" designed to deprive opponents of sleep. Head coach Thomas Tuchel shrugged off the disruption.
We start the match at 6 p.m. local time, so if we miss a few hours of sleep, we'll make up for it later in the morning.
England had tried to keep the hotel location secret, but fans found it anyway. The altitude of Estadio Azteca, around 2,200 metres above sea level, was another concern, with sports medicine experts warning that thinner air could accelerate fatigue. Forward Marcus Rashford insisted the squad was prepared.
For us it makes no difference how we prepare for the match. We have to be focused and ready for anything. That's one of our strengths.
Bellingham strikes twice in six-minute blitz
The match ignited in the 36th minute when Bukayo Saka crossed for Bellingham to head home. Two minutes later, a misplaced pass by Gilberto Mora allowed Bellingham to combine with Kane and slot in his second. Mexico responded immediately: a set-piece delivery deflected off Ezri Konsa and fell to Julian Quinones, who smashed in a goal in the 42nd minute to make it 2-1 at the break.
England survive red card and late penalty
Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 53rd minute, reducing England to ten men. Instead of crumbling, they extended their lead seven minutes later when Kane converted a penalty for 3-1. Mexico refused to fade and earned a penalty of their own in the 89th minute, converted by Raul Jimenez. The hosts pushed for an equaliser but England held on to win 3-2.

Perfect Mexico run ends; Norway await England
Mexico had entered the match with a perfect record: three group-stage wins, six goals scored and none conceded, followed by a 2-0 victory over Ecuador. England's path had been shakier, scraping past DR Congo with two late Kane goals after an unconvincing group phase. The result sets up a quarter-final against Norway, who beat Brazil 2-1 earlier in the day.
