Egypt advances past group stage for first time as Iran awaits fate after dramatic 1-1 draw
Egypt reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time after a 1-1 draw with Iran on Friday, while a stoppage-time Iranian goal was disallowed by VAR, leaving Iran's fate to be decided by Saturday's remaining group matches.
The early goals
Egypt took a fifth-minute lead when Mahmoud Saber fired a loose ball through the legs of Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand after a slick move involving former Liverpool star Mohamed Salah. Iran responded swiftly, earning a penalty in the 11th minute only for captain Mehdi Taremi to be denied by a diving save from Egypt's Mostafa Shoubir. Three minutes later, Ramin Rezaeian stabbed home the rebound after Shoubir parried another effort, levelling the match at 1-1.
Iran's penalty and crossbar agony
The match remained locked after the frantic opening, but the dying stages brought high drama. Taremi again came close deep in normal time, rising to head against the crossbar. Saeid Ezatolahi also hit the woodwork with a header in stoppage time. The Iranian bench had already spilled onto the pitch in celebration when Shoja Khalilzadeh found the net in the 93rd minute, only for VAR to rule him narrowly offside after a review by Polish referee Szymon Marciniak.

The disallowed goal prevented what would have been a winning moment for Iran. The decision preserved a 1-1 result and meant Egypt clung on for the draw. The scenes of Iranian joy turning to despair were among the most dramatic of the tournament so far. The Guardian described a "rollercoaster evening" while The Independent called it "the most enthralling – and agonising – seven minutes of stoppage time you will ever see."
Reaching the knockout stage under these circumstances would not merely be a sporting achievement; it would also be a symbol of resilience, hope, and national unity.
Group G standings and the path ahead
Belgium topped Group G after a 5-1 win over New Zealand, leaving both Belgium and Egypt on five points and Iran on three. Egypt took second spot on goal difference (plus-2 to Belgium's plus-4). Iran, unbeaten with three draws, finished third and now sits sixth in the table of best third-placed teams, with eight to advance. Their fate will be known by Saturday night.

Egypt's first knockout berth
The Pharaohs never before progressed beyond the group phase and now face Australia in Arlington, Texas, on July 3. Coach Hossam Hassan, who substituted Salah on 57 minutes, will prepare his side for a last-32 tie that shifts the team's itinerary from Seattle to Dallas. For Iran, survival hinges on results in the final groups, with a probable round-of-32 matchup against Switzerland pencilled in if they qualify.
