Egypt win first ever World Cup knockout tie, beating Australia 4-2 on penalties after 1-1 draw in Arlington
Emam Ashour's early header was cancelled by a Mohamed Hany own goal, but the Pharaohs held nerve in the shootout to earn a historic first victory in a World Cup elimination match.
Pre-match tensions
Hours before kick-off in Arlington, Texas, Egypt's delegation was involved in a confrontation with US police outside the team hotel. Mahmoud Trézéguet approached security barriers to sign an autograph for a child, but an officer abruptly pushed the young fan away. Assistant coach Ibrahim Hassan, twin brother of head coach Hossam Hassan, confronted the officer and was himself shoved. The altercation, which involved shouting and a brief physical exchange, was defused by other police and Egyptian staff.
Ashour's early header
On the pitch, Australia threatened first: Cristian Volpato's long-range effort skimmed the crossbar in the fifth minute. Egypt, however, were clinical with their first foray forward. From a free-kick, Karim Hafez swung in a cross from the right and Emam Ashour, arriving unmarked at the back post, powered a header past goalkeeper Patrick Beach to make it 1-0 after 13 minutes. Omar Marmoush had a shot blocked by Harry Souttar soon after, but the Socceroos struggled to create clear chances before the interval.
Own goal levels the tie
Australia improved after the break and forced an equaliser in the 55th minute. Aiden O'Neill delivered a free-kick from the left, and defender Mohamed Hany, attempting to clear, diverted the ball into his own net. The mistake made Hany the first player in World Cup history to score two own goals in the tournament, having also put through his own net against Belgium in the group stage. The goal also took the 2026 edition to 13 own goals, a new single-tournament record.
Shootout decides place in last 16
Neither side could find a winner in normal time, though Egypt came close in stoppage time when Ramy Rabia's header was palmed away by Beach. Extra time brought sustained Egyptian pressure, with Mohamed Salah driving attacks from the right flank, but his 93rd-minute effort sailed over the bar. The stalemate forced a penalty shootout. Egypt converted all four of their kicks, Salah scoring with a Panenka, while Australian centre-backs Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both missed. The 4-2 shootout victory sent the Pharaohs through.
Historic milestone and next opponent
The result marked Egypt's first success in a knockout match at a men's World Cup. Their only previous appearance beyond the group stage, in 1934, ended in a 4-2 defeat to Hungary. Egypt, who finished second in Group D behind Belgium, now await the winner of the late-night tie between Argentina and Cape Verde in Miami. That round-of-16 fixture is scheduled for Tuesday in Atlanta.
