Eastern Germany hit by showers and thunderstorms before midweek summer warmth arrives
The Deutscher Wetterdienst warns of repeated showers, isolated thunderstorms and storm-force gusts across Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania this weekend, with a dramatic temperature rise expected from Tuesday.
Weekend outlook
Heavy cloud, rain showers and isolated thunderstorms dominate the weather picture for eastern Germany on Saturday and Sunday. The Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) predicts changeable to heavily overcast skies, with repeated rainfall and only brief bright intervals. Maximum temperatures stay unseasonably low for June, reaching 19 to 22°C in most areas, while the Baltic coast sees 17 to 20°C.
Storms and wind hazards
Storm-force gusts are the main concern. In exposed locations the DWD forecasts peak speeds of 75 km/h on the Brocken in Saxony-Anhalt and on the Fichtelberg in the Saxon Ore Mountains from Saturday through Monday, with similar bursts of 55 to 70 km/h across the highlands of the Thuringian Forest. In shower- and thunderstorm-affected parts of Berlin and Brandenburg, gusts could briefly reach 80 km/h on Saturday, accompanied by small-diameter hail. Overnight winds will persist on the Brocken and Fichtelberg through Sunday and Monday nights.
Temperature contrast
While the weekend remains cool, a rapid warm-up is on the horizon. On Sunday afternoon highs will struggle to exceed 13 to 17°C in the uplands of Saxony and Thuringia. The DWD expects the cold marine air to retreat from Tuesday onwards, with temperatures climbing to 21 to 24°C across the eastern states and up to 29°C in parts of southern Germany. Later in the week, highs may reach 35°C in the region that is currently under storm warnings, providing a stark shift from the current unsettled pattern.
- Showers and thunderstorms spreading across eastern Germany; gusts to 80 km/h in Berlin/Brandenburg thunderstorm cores, 75 km/h on Brocken and Fichtelberg.
- Continued unsettled with local thunderstorms in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt; daytime highs 16–19°C in Berlin/Brandenburg, 13–17°C in uplands.
- Residual showers mainly in Saxon uplands; mountain gusts on Brocken and Fichtelberg gradually easing; temperatures still below 22°C.
- Improvement begins: sunnier spells, highs 21–24°C across eastern states, up to 29°C in southwestern Germany.
- Heatwave potential: temperatures up to 35°C expected in Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt as high pressure builds.
Regional detail
Berlin and Brandenburg saw the most widespread thunderstorm activity on Saturday, with the DWD recording gusts up to 70 km/h near shower cells and 80 km/h in thunderstorm cores. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Baltic coastline was also windy, with gusts to 70 km/h. The northern halves of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt are forecast to experience the bulk of the thundery downpours on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, while Thuringia should gradually dry out through the weekend, with overnight lows dipping to 9 to 12°C.
What comes next
By Monday, only isolated showers are expected, mainly over the higher ground of Saxony. Gusty conditions on the Brocken, Fichtelberg and Thuringian ridges will gradually ease during the day. A more settled, sunnier phase begins nationwide on Tuesday, pushing daytime highs into the low-to-mid 20s across the formerly storm-affected areas and setting the stage for a potentially hot end to the week.
