Netherlands defeat India 3-1 to close in on Hockey World Cup semi-finals
Duco Telgenkamp, Tjep Hoedemakers and Thijs van Dam scored in Amstelveen to put the Olympic champions on the verge of the semi-finals, ending a streak of tight scorelines against India.
Scoreless first half in Amstelveen
The Dutch men's national hockey team moved closer to the semi-finals of the World Cup on Saturday afternoon, defeating India 3-1 in their second-stage pool match at the Wagener Stadion in Amstelveen. The tournament, co-hosted across venues in the Netherlands and Belgium, brought the classic fixture back to the Amsterdamse Bos 53 years after the 1973 World Cup final. In that 1973 contest, the Netherlands overcame a 2-0 deficit through two goals by Ties Kruize before winning on penalty strokes. Before pushback on Saturday, organist Joke Meijer, known as Orgel Joke from Vlaardingen, performed the Wilhelmus on keyboard and pedals from the pitch. The opening two quarters remained goalless despite early scoring attempts. Floris Wortelboer struck the side netting with a backhand effort in the tenth minute, while Tjep Hoedemakers earned an early penalty corner that Indian runners deflected. In the 25th minute, goalkeeper Derk Meijer stopped a shot from Dilpreet Singh after a turnover by Jorrit Croon, while Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera saved a diving tip from Hoedemakers.
- Floris Wortelboer hits the side netting with a backhand shot

- Thijs van Dam scores on a breakaway to make it 3-1
Three field goals decide the contest
Unlike many meetings between the two teams, the outcome was settled by open play rather than penalty corners. Jip Janssen, who returned to the squad after missing the previous match against Argentina with an injury, failed to convert three successive short corners during the second quarter. India also threatened from set pieces after the interval, but Harmanpreet Singh sent one attempt against Lars Balk's shin guard and missed the target with a second. The breakthrough arrived late in the third quarter when Tijmen Reyenga sent a pass into the shooting circle, allowing Duco Telgenkamp to deflect the ball into the net. Telgenkamp had already scored in earlier tournament victories against New Zealand and Argentina. In the fourth quarter, Koen Bijen delivered a cross from the right wing to set up Hoedemakers, who finished from close range to give the Dutch side a 2-0 lead.
India response and late Dutch counter
India narrowed the score with ten minutes remaining in regulation time. Specialist Harmanpreet Singh converted from a penalty corner to score his team's lone goal of the afternoon. Dutch head coach Jeroen Delmée had warned about the threat posed by the opposition set-piece unit before the match.
India has a perilous penalty corner.
With India pushing players into attack, the Dutch team forced a high turnover with five minutes remaining. Thijs van Dam broke clear in front of the goalkeeper and finished to secure the 3-1 victory. The result ended a run of nine consecutive matches between the two nations that had each ended in a draw or a one-goal margin.
Qualification path to the semi-finals
The victory leaves the Olympic champions in a strong position to advance from the second-stage winners' pool. The Netherlands carried three points into the pool from their 3-1 victory over Argentina during the opening group phase. Semi-final qualification can be mathematically secured on Saturday evening if the match between England and Argentina concludes in a draw or an English victory. If Argentina win that contest, the Netherlands will play England in Amstelveen on Monday at 18:00 to determine which side moves into the final four.
