The trial concerning the shooting of the nephew of a prominent imprisoned drug boss will begin on 7 September 2026 under strict security arrangements in Düsseldorf. To manage heightened security concerns, the responsible criminal chamber of the Düsseldorf Regional Court will move the entire legal proceeding into the specialized high-security tract of the Higher Regional Court. A court spokesperson announced that the chamber chose the fortified location to conduct the hearings safely against the three accused men. The official indictment in the case was finalized and submitted by the public prosecutor's office in early June 2026 after extensive inquiries. Within the formal indictment, prosecutors charge two of the men with attempted murder, while the third defendant is accused of aiding and abetting the armed attack.
Ambush on a city thoroughfare
The armed ambush took place on the afternoon of 30 December 2025 on a main traffic thoroughfare in Düsseldorf. Investigators determined that the 40-year-old victim was riding inside a taxi, heading back toward the Düsseldorf central railway station when the assault began. Two assailants abruptly jumped out of an automobile positioned directly in front of the taxi and opened fire on the vehicle. A 39-year-old Syrian national and a 22-year-old Turkish national allegedly discharged ten separate shots at the taxi passenger at close range. The victim was struck by seven bullets during the shooting, sustaining life-threatening injuries before being rushed to medical care. Doctors performed an immediate emergency surgery, which allowed the victim to survive the severe wounds.

Before entering the taxi, the 40-year-old victim had participated in a public rally held outside the Dutch consulate in Düsseldorf. Participants at the demonstration had gathered to publicly demand the release of the victim's uncle, an infamous drug boss imprisoned in the Netherlands for many years. Due to his notoriety and extensive illicit syndicate, the uncle has frequently been referred to as the "Pablo Escobar of Europe." The nephew was ambushed shortly after departing the consulate gathering as his taxi navigated urban traffic toward the main station. Investigating authorities have remained silent on whether the suspects acted as hired contract killers or were operating as members of a rival drug gang.
Police raids, weapons cache and manhunt
Law enforcement officers initiated a widespread investigation that led to arrests in two separate German federal states. German police special forces located and arrested the 39-year-old Syrian suspect in the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony. Meanwhile, police units detained the 22-year-old Turkish suspect, who is accused of being the primary shooter, during a raid in the city of Gelsenkirchen. Inside the 22-year-old's residential apartment, investigators confiscated an assault rifle and another firearm for forensic examination. While three individuals now face legal proceedings starting in September, police officials confirmed that an active manhunt is ongoing for a fourth suspect connected to the ambush.
